Kongsberg Maritime will supply the design and integrated equipment package for a new walk-to-work offshore service vessel (OSV), to be built by ST Engineering Marine in Singapore for a leading oil & gas company.

The 97-metre vessel of Kongsberg Maritime UT 5520 design will accommodate 106 people and features a motion-compensated gangway to enable safe transfer of personnel between to and from offshore installations.

The new design is a further development of Kongsberg Maritime’s extensive range of vessel types for the offshore energy market. It builds on recent experience with the successful UT5519DE CSOVs (commissioning service operation vessel), which are deployed on offshore wind projects in the North Sea.

It is designed for oil and gas operations and will have a greater endurance of up to nine weeks away from shore, compared to a CSOV industry standard of four weeks.

Zero usv’s oceanus12 hits the water pioneering world’s first fully autonomous usv fleet exclusively for charter

British SME ZeroUSV is one step closer to offering the world’s first charter fleet of fully autonomous uncrewed surface vessels after its inaugural Oceanus12 touched the water for the first time at Manor Marine in Portland, Dorset, this week.

The fully equipped vessel is now ready for commissioning and integration trials from ZeroUSV’s home port of Plymouth. The launching of the first Oceanus12 represents the culmination of nearly 18 months of design, engineering and build effort from the team at ZeroUSV which has been built on the success of the Mayflower 400’s transatlantic autonomous voyage - a milestone achieved through the same inter-company collaborations between Zero USV’s parent company MSubs, their non-profit Promare, and sister marine software company MarineAI.

The launch of the first vessel in the Oceanus12 series, does not though mean any let up in the pace and the coming weeks will see a series of key milestones achieved, with vessel two due to be completed in late March and vessels three and four hot on their heels. An official boat naming ceremony is scheduled for the spring, with a line-up of VIPs on the guest list.

The Oceanus12, designed for long distance over-the-horizon operations, has also been designed to be mission agnostic, allowing a wide range of potential applications: from surveys and monitoring of critical assets to safety, geophysical surveys, border control, fisheries, defence and more. Since the “charter” business model was first announced just under 12 months ago, significant interest has been generated which has led to exciting opportunities for these first two vessels, information on which will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Oceanus12 is groundbreaking in multiple areas of technology: from its hybrid-electric drive system, with twin drives for redundancy and efficiency coupled with sufficient onboard fuel for a cruising range of more than 2500 nautical miles, to the use of the only truly fully autonomous software stack on the market – MarineAI’s Guardian software. Unveiling a New Perspective: Exclusive True-Colour Image of Endurance Shipwreck Released

Voyis and the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust reveal unprecedented details of the legendary vessel using advanced optical technology.

The Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust and Voyis Imaging proudly present an exclusive new image of the historic Endurance shipwreck. Captured using the cutting-edge Voyis Observer Imaging System, this latest image provides an unparalleled view of the vessel and the seabed, revealing intricate details with clarity never seen before.

Building on a previously released image of Endurance, this new capture showcases the ship’s preserved structure with remarkable precision, made possible through Voyis’ True Colour technology. Unlike traditional underwater imaging, which can suffer from colour distortion and reduced visibility, the Voyis Observer Imaging System accurately restores the shipwreck’s natural hues and textures, offering a more authentic representation of how Endurance appears in its final resting place beneath the Weddell Sea.

Since red wavelengths are absorbed more rapidly by water, the perceived colour of underwater objects is significantly altered. Standard cameras do not compensate for this underwater colour shift, as their colour formation models neglect the strong wavelength dependency of light in a submerged environment. As a result, shipwrecks and subsea assets often appear with unnatural blue or green tints.

Voyis’ True Colour technology addresses this challenge by leveraging machine learning to efficiently train a Colour Correction Model for the current survey location. This survey-grade imaging solution corrects the distortions caused by underwater light absorption, producing images that represent colours as they would be perceived in air. This advancement allows explorers to visualize the true colour of subsea assets, uncovering fine details that standard cameras fail to capture.

MacArtney expands global footprint with hub in UAE

Also launching at Ocean Business is McLane Research Laboratories’ newest eDNA sampler, the Suspended Particulate Rosette sampler (SuPR), which enables operator programmed selections that include total volume, flow rate and sample collection time, targeting phytoplankton and particulate trace metals, as well as eDNA.

Ocean Business 2025 conference programme announced

Preparations for Ocean Business 2025 are well underway, with a bigger than ever exhibition and a packed two-day conference programme, more details of which can now be unveiled.

The line-up of industry experts reflects the scope and ambition of the sector as it gathers together for the global marine technology and science show, to be held at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in Southampton from April 8-10.

Keynote speakers on day one of the conference, taking place on Tuesday, April 8, include John Siddorn, NOC chief executive, examining the centre’s role in industry engagement; Andy Liddell of Defence Equipment and Support, exploring the future of autonomous systems in the Royal Navy; and Commander Mark Butcher, representing Navy Develop and its many technical collaborations.

At the end of the morning session, the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) will present its coveted Business Person of the Year Award.

After lunch, Becky Conway, CEO of the Hydrographic Society UK & Ireland, will lead a discussion on Future Skills for the Next Generation of Ocean Technology, along with Fugro Academy’s Mike Redmayne, while Chris White of the Australian Maritime College will offer an Antipodean perspective on training in autonomous maritime systems.

Following an early careers platform for student hydrographers, two pan-sector panels, both mediated by Conference Chair Sue John, will look at Space and the Marine Environment, with the NOC’s Paul Bell investigating the Remote Sensing Revolution, plus presentations from the European Space Agency, the Space South Central Enterprise Network, and Surrey Satellite Technology.

The Future of our Ocean is the overall theme of day two, on Wednesday, April 9, chaired by BP’s Mark Poole and with a roll-call of international innovators, from RS Aqua’s Ryan Mowat, to Neil Manning of Cellular Robotics Canada, and Adam Hamilton of MMA Offshore, Australia, addressing everything from intelligent underwater acoustics, to long-endurance AUVs, and the challenges of renewable energy surveys.

Also not to be missed, in the second session on this theme, chaired by Trish Buxton of Thurn Group, are talks by Port of London hydrographer John Dillon-Leetch, on meeting the needs of the UK’s number one port; Andrijana Horvat from Hidrocibalae Croatia with an update on AI’s role in security challenges; Adam Parnell, of safety at sea charity CHIRP, focusing on incident reporting and saving lives; and Sam Taylor, of Ocean Infinity, charting the course of the Armada fleet of unmanned surface robots.

Continuing the Future of our Ocean theme, David Parker and Rob Clarke of the UK Centre for Seabed Mapping and UK Hydrographic Office will be joined by Nicola Robinson of ORE Catapult, the UK technology innovation and research centre for offshore wind, wave and tidal energy, and Ryan Mowat, SMI’s Marine Science and Technology Council Director.

All will then reconvene for the final panel session of the day, chaired by Mike King of Sulmara Subsea, to consider how developments in the ocean science community are disrupting the status quo.

Successful Underwater Surveillance Test with Novacavi's Hybrid Cable

Innovatum Acquire Majority Stake in Suffolk Survey & Subsea Services (S4)

Two Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk based companies within the offshore energy and marine survey & subsea inspection services sectors, have joined forces.

Innovatum based in Ingham, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk have acquired a majority stake in Suffolk Survey & Subsea Services (S4) based in Risby, Bury St Edmunds.

This strategic acquisition allows both companies to continue operating providing their core services to existing and new clients, but also in the provision of combined turnkey marine survey (multibeam, geophysical, pUXO), positioning and inspection ROV (subsea cable, pipeline & structures) services, with full delivery.

Provision of ROV, Survey & Inspection services is targeted primarily within both companies’ significant specialisms, experience and track record of the nearshore environment from intertidal zone/ shallow water to 25-30m water depths, but also for offshore scopes up to 50m water depths.

Combined services can be provided to client vessel options or fuller turnkey solutions will be considered via the below.

Existing key collaborative partnerships with fit for purpose vessel, UAV, geotechnical, benthic, equipment rental and processing companies allow for greater magnitude turnkey solutions and operations to be fulfilled.

Through this distributor agreement, Impact Subsea's range of sensor solutions will be available for purchase and rental through Ashtead Technology Singapore. This partnership provides customers in the region with increased flexibility and choice when sourcing advanced underwater technology.
