Offshore Survey 2019

Offshore Survey 2019 Launches Technology Packed Programme

Offshore Survey, which takes place alongside Ocean Business at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton UK, from 10-11 April 2019, has just launched an exciting programme that looks to the future of the offshore industry.  The programme highlights technologies that could potentially transform the sector, as well as addressing current issues and providing feedback on major industry projects.

Chair of the conference, Gordon Johnston, explains, "This year we have a great line up of papers covering Autonomous and Unmanned Vehicles, Imaging, Data and Future Perspectives, amongst others. Two days of inspiring, intriguing and thought provoking sessions that offer an insight into the innovative technologies coming through, case studies and reality checks as well as some insight into the future potential of offshore surveys."

The conference will deliver 35 top quality presentations from industry leaders and emerging technology companies, as well as world renowned academic and industry organisations.

For those looking for a taste of what the future holds, there will be a fascinating session on 'Future Industry Perspective'.  From handling data to remote management of technology, these presentations will share knowledge to help plan the technologies of the future. Within this session, one of the biggest international projects of the moment, 'The Nippon Foundation GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project', which aims to map the seabed globally by 2030, will be sharing information about progress to date, how new and emerging technology is being utilised, and how the right mapping campaigns are in place to gather missing data.

With autonomous and unmanned vehicles being such a crucial part of offshore work right now, two sessions are being dedicated to the topic.  These will include seven presentations over the two days of the conference from international organisations including: Omniaccess (Spain), Kietta (France), XOCEAN (Ireland), Subsea7 (UK), Sonardyne International (UK), Nortek (UK), and L3 ASV (UK).

More general issues of interest to the offshore industry will be addressed, such as the global problem of plastic waste.  Gordana Jakovljevic from the University of Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovnia, will be presenting information in the 'Satellite Products' session about a project involved in the mapping of ocean plastic and formulating ways to monitor and prevent pollution using remote sensing data and algorithms.

Other sessions will cover 'Coastal and Environment', 'Imagery and Visualisation', 'Education and Competencies', 'Data and Digitalisation', with presentations that give a unique mix of technology and business.

Offshore Survey runs alongside Ocean Business, a high calibre three-day exhibition of technology and services, this means that delegates can explore the exhibition and enjoy combined social and networking events, including welcome drinks the night before the Ocean Business show opens and a wine trail on the opening day of the show. Record breaking figures announced from Ocean Business

With the Ocean Business team now back from organising another international event held just six weeks after the largest Ocean Business event to date – they have now had time to review and analyse the figures. The 10th anniversary Ocean Business, held in April at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton UK, has once again exceeded all expectations with 4,350 attendees through the door from an incredible 61 countries.

Versha Carter, Group Director of Diversified Communications confirmed that “Visitor numbers were up by 3% with an amazing 38% coming from outside of the UK. Not only did we have more actual bodies through the door but they stayed for longer which added to the show being the busiest ever. We have had many exhibitors saying that Ocean Business has now become the best ocean technology show in the industry and most certainly the one that offers the best return on investment. We went onsite for this event very much aware that the industry is still in the midst of challenging times and it was wonderful to see how Ocean Business provided that vote of confidence and delivered a much needed boost back in to the industry.”

The team were inundated with emails and telephone calls from exhibitors about the outstanding quality of this year’s show. They included Terry Sloane, MD of Planet Ocean, who said “It has been the busiest trade show we have ever attended, not just Ocean Business, but any trade show in the industry!”

Del Norte’s Laurie Smith felt the same, saying, “The best show. I get more leads at this show than any other major show that I exhibit at in the UK.”

Debbie Durgen from Klein commented, “This show has been phenomenal - it wasn’t just the quantity, it was also the quality!”

The biggest exhibition at Ocean Business yet!

With over 360 international exhibitors from 26 different countries, this was the biggest exhibition at Ocean Business yet. Cheri Arvonio, Event Manager, confirmed that “Despite always having a waiting list for this event at least six months out of the show – this year we were able to accommodate even more companies than ever before. Judging by the feedback we are expecting that between 80-90% of the space will be re-booked within weeks. For a show that doesn’t take place again for another 2 years’, that is outstanding.”

The training and demonstration sessions are a prominent part of Ocean Business and are what makes the event so unique. There were back-to-back workshops hosted over the course of the show with many of the sessions bursting with visitors – particularly those that were located in the dockside area. Visitors also enjoyed trying out products in test tanks and onboard vessels, as well as learning about technologies in training workshops and seminars. 1,640 places were booked on 168 workshops with many sessions standing room only.

With the show being a priority in the industry diary, Ocean Business played host to some key associated industry events. For the first time the European Commission supported two events organised by Marine Southeast and the European Enterprise Network that both focused on the convergence of defence and commercial applications in the marine environment. In addition there were a number of high profile meetings such as; a series of presentations designed to develop business opportunities coordinated by The Maritime Alliance; the Hydrographic Society’s AGM and ten workshops showcasing the world class technologies and facilities of the NOC.

Showing commitment to the future of the industry

Ocean Business once again hosted the Ocean Careers event which aims to highlight the range of opportunities within the ocean technology sector. Always a popular element, 2017 was no exception, Paige Harrison a student from the University of Liverpool commented; “Ocean Careers is really, really good. I came here because I was unsure about what I'm going to do in the future, whether I'm going to continue with my masters or not and this has helped me clarify what’s actually happening and what I can do in the future.”

Running alongside the exhibition, demonstrations, conference, associated meetings at Ocean Careers, was a schedule of ever popular social events, always a favourite at Ocean Business, providing the perfect platform for colleagues to catch up and do business. Vlad Lazar, Survey Engineer, Marine Research SRL, Romania commented, “A very good industry event where you can meet all the important players in the world of ocean and underwater exploration.” Mike Hole, Commercial Director, Keller, UK summerised the show as “Ocean Business is the best attended and most friendly event in our calendar. High level industry contacts from all over the world. Not to be missed.”

Ocean Business will be returning to the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK from 9 – 11 April 2019.

Southampton to Host Biggest Ocean Technology Event of the Year: Ocean Business 2017

Southampton will once again become the centre of the global ocean technology industry, as international visitors flock in their thousands to Ocean Business 2017; the world’s largest ocean technology taking place this year. This event will coincide with the launch of some of the most exciting sea technology devices yet which include robotic swimming snakes designed for subsea maintenance; high definition underwater drones; and optical reconstruction systems delivering underwater seascapes to virtual reality devices.

Taking place from Tuesday 4 to Thursday 6 April at Southampton’s National Oceanography Centre (NOC), the city will receive a small boost to its economy, with bars, restaurants and hotels filled with over 5000 of the show’s visitors coming in from 65 countries around the world – a truly international event.

Southampton as a Global Maritime City

Versha Carter, Group Director for Ocean Business, comments:  “With the Solent’s world-renowned marine and maritime strengths, Southampton is the perfect setting to host this ocean technology exhibition that attract 350 of the world's top ocean technology companies to the show.   These companies are high tech companies developing products and solutions for working in extreme ocean environments and together are enabling scientists and explorers to go in to deeper parts of the ocean that have never before been explored.

62% of these exhibiting companies are from outside of the UK

Our exhibitors enjoy coming to Southampton due to the strong maritime and naval history of the region.  Some of them have even set up remote offices recognizing that Southampton is a city well suited for supporting maritime and ocean related businesses and acting as a gateway into Europe.

The shows organisers believe this year's Ocean Business will be one of the most exciting yet.  Versha Carter continues, “There has been a vast leap in the progress of autonomous vehicles and robotic devices, both underwater and on the surface.  Whether it’s discovering an ancient shipwreck, mapping unchartered waters, searching for sea mines, or conducting remote arctic research, devices are making it possible for us to understand the oceans like never before."

With 350 exhibitors at Ocean Business from over 26 different countries, almost every field of ocean technology is covered at the show.  Here are some highlights:

Fareham-based ASV Sheds Light on the Mysteries of the Oceans with their Unmanned Surface Vehicles, Stand U4

Autonomous surface vehicles are revolutionising the way we gain access to information about the ocean.  Currently we rely on large military, commercial, or scientific vessels with expensive equipment, but the introduction of autonomous surface vessels has made it possible to understand and capture processes with precision, more cost effectively and with a lower carbon footprint.

World renown Fareham-based ASV Global will be demonstrating their unmanned autonomous boat which will be following a pre-programmed route around the harbour to map the seabed, with live data and camera footage being fed back to the ASV stand.

Test Drive Underwater Drones at Deep Trekker, Stand G12

Aerial drones have been widely accepted in the consumer market, but there is still a huge amount of potential for their use in the underwater world for offshore inspections, and helping researchers and archeologists to easily navigate investigation sites remotely with live HD video.

In fact, Deep Trekker ‘DTG2’, has just completed a project for Parks Canada in the icy waters of Northern Canada to investigate the HMS Erebus; the ill-fated ship from the famous Sir John Franklin’s Northern Passage expedition of 1845.

Deep Trekker's drones will be available for test-piloting in a 200-gallon water tank on the Deep Trekker stand.

Robotic Swimming Snakes are the Future of Subsea Maintenance!  Kongsberg Maritime and Eelume, Stands N1 & P2

Resembling robotic aliens from a sci-fi movie, Kongsberg Maritime and Eelume have developed snake-like swimming robots for permanent installation on the seabed.

The robots live on the seabed and can be used to remotely inspect and clean equipment, even adjusting valves and chokes on machinery.  These jobs account for a large part of subsea maintenance and the robots could slash costs.

British-Engineered Mini Robotic Vehicles at Planet Ocean, Stand G12

There’s been much interest in the arrival of ‘micro-subs’.  These mini underwater robotic vehicles are only 50cm long and their tiny size means they can be used in new ways.  The micro-subs can be grouped together to form ‘shoals’ of micro-subs to collectively create a far superior 3D map of the underwater environment, quickly covering a much greater area.

Launch event planned for ecoSubs at midday on 4 April.

Remotely Operated Vehicles Map an Area the Size of Wales in just a Month!  Ocean Infinity, Stand V5

Over half of our planet is yet to be explored; the oceans comprise 71% of the earth’s surface yet only 5% have been accurately mapped.  Ocean Infinity will explore unknown depths using highly innovative technology.  Six HUGIN autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), capable of operating in 6000 m water depth, will collect high resolution data at record breaking speeds.

The AUV fleet will be accompanied by six unmanned surface vehicles to ensure precise positioning and constant communication.  Each AUV will include a variety of high tech sensors for mapping the ocean, while gathering valuable scientific information.

Opening up the World of Underwater Virtual Reality with ORUS 3D Optical Reconstruction at Comex, Stand E5F

Anyone can dive to the depths of the ocean and walk the seascape using ORUS 3D.  It produces very high resolution 3D models of underwater sites using a multiple camera sensor.  This contactless measurement technology is very useful for offshore and civil engineering, as well as environmental assessments, archaeology and defence as it is able to reproduce submillimetric detail.

Mounted on a remotely operated vehicle, it can work at any ocean depth and produces exceptionally high resolution models with texture and colour.  These can then be viewed by screen or a VR device to allow people to walk around and inspect structures and seascapes as though they were there.

Understanding the Future of Our Oceans

With all the technology on offer and high-level meetings of key industry decision makers, this year's show provides an unmissable opportunity to understand the potential of ocean science and developments that are essential for our future.  A full programme of activities is available at  www.oceanbusiness.com for Ocean Business 2017, taking place at the NOC from 4-6 April.
