Record breaking Ocean Business 2025 is ‘best yet’!

The ocean science and technology world descended on Southampton in record numbers in early April for the biggest and busiest ever edition of Ocean Business.

Crowds of more than 10,650 - 23% up on Ocean Business 2023 - gathered at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) over three days of game-changing innovation, exciting product launches and quayside demonstrations as Ocean Business 2025 welcomed visitors from more than 80 countries to the Solent.

Across the expanded exhibition space and action-packed dockside, deals were done, new partnerships forged, existing relationships reinforced and networks extended.

‘The best one yet,’ said Graeme McGhee of Scorpion Oceanics. ‘Head and shoulders above other expos,’ said Stuart Howard, founder of Kuro Animation. ‘So many visitors from the very beginning and amazing conversations on all three days,’ said Chris Wallace of Verlume.

The atmosphere fizzed with glimpses of the future but it all started with a dive into the past as keynote speaker Mensun Bound held his capacity audience rapt with tales from the 2022 international quest to locate Ernest Shackleton’s ship Endurance.

As the director of exploration on the Antarctic expedition, Bound recalled the moment when, with cutting edge Saab Seaeye Sabertooth ROVs and top subsea experts, they located the ship, preserved in the ice for 117 years, at a depth of 3,000m.

‘It was obviously something man-made,’ he said, ‘and the only man-made thing in the Weddell Sea was Endurance.’

Later in the show, Voyis Imaging explained how it helped recreate a high-resolution 3D model of the Endurance, deploying its Insight Pro Underwater Laser Scanner and the Observer Pro Imaging System.

Sister company Sonardyne also supported the Endurance mission, with its underwater navigation and positioning technology Sprint-Nav, and at Ocean Business it launched Sprint-Nav U for compact marine robotic platforms.

Sonardyne Marine Robotics Business Development Manager Aidan Thorn, who has been involved with Ocean Business for 20 years, said this year was the best yet: ‘The interest in our new Sprint Nav-U was fantastic, being able to launch the product at OB has expanded our reach to potential new customers and having on-water demos shows credibility in our product in action.’

He also engaged with the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators at Ocean Careers, telling them that ‘a career in the marine industry increasingly means a career working with robots’.

Teledyne generated much excitement with the launch on day one of its compact navigator, the world’s ‘smallest and highest performing, fully integrated autonomous navigating solution’.

‘We couldn’t have asked for a better show launch, customers are loving the navigator and we’ve had so many existing and new contacts coming onto the stand,’ said Marketing Manager Guy Frankland.

Other news and launches included Planet Ocean announcing a collaboration with Sonardyne International, resulting in the successful integration and deployment of three gold standard instruments from its reseller partners, Sea-Bird Scientific, Sequoia and 4H-Jena.

Geo Acoustics launched its new Side Scan Sonar, which attracted enquiries from as far afield as Dubai, China, India and Italy; and RS Aqua, which announced a new UK distribution deal for US company SRS’s Fusion Hybrid ROV, said it was ‘still riding the wave after catching up with our partners, customers and old and new faces!’ at Ocean Business.

With more than 350 exhibitors plus over 180 hours of training and demonstrations on the dockside, on board vessels and in the classroom, this year’s show offered insights into everything from R3Vox’s Voxometer, described by chairman Jens Steenstrup as a super advanced acoustic platform that does what multi-beams used to do ‘but on steroids’; to Hydrophis, a ‘revolution’ in analysing underwater survey data, unveiled by Scottish firm Tritonia.

Some 24 companies shared space at the Canadian pavilion, seen as an economical way to meet everyone in one place and access markets around the world.

‘We’d like to bring even more next time,’ said Shelly Petten, Executive Director of Oceans Advance, who has been coming to the show for 18 years, representing Newfoundland and Labrador.

‘Canada is an export nation and the hope is to grow Canadian exports. We have a long trading history with the UK and, given the current US tariffs, we’re encouraging customers to target the European markets more.’

Cathy Williams, at the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, added that Ocean Business is considered an anchor event for Canada. ‘We are well established at the show so the ocean tech world knows the best and brightest of our companies will be here.’

Exhibiting for the first time, meanwhile, Curtis Lee of Shenzhen headquartered QYSEA was delighted with the response to the company’s fish-shaped Fifish underwater robot, on display in the test tank to show off its hydrodynamic properties.

‘It’s a very relevant show for us with a very international draw. We’d seen in recent years our competitors and partners here so decided to come ourselves and have found the quality of the leads and the demand for our product has been very strong.’

Alongside the exhibition and demonstrations, speakers and expert panels drawn from across the sector shared ideas to help shape the future of ocean technology.

Dr Louise Butt of the Space South Central Enterprise Network spoke of the huge increase in maritime users of space technology, in particular with AI driven satellites. Over the next ten years, non-geostationary orbit satcomms is expected to surge from 20% to 90% and the number of vessels using at least one satcomm service will double, to 90,000.

And at the Doing Business with Defence session, the first event to be held in the NOC’s new Innovation Hub, Claire Budden, Deputy Director of Navy Commercial, spelt out the opportunities in the supply chain, with around £32 billion a year spent on defence contracts, likely to ‘accelerate rapidly’ as the government commits to spending 3% of GDP on defence in the next parliament.

Helping make Ocean Business a triumph was the Society of Marine Industries (SMI), whose chief executive, Tom Chant, said the exhibition ‘has long been a standout event on the industry calendar, and this year’s show proved exactly why’.

‘The ocean technology sector is at the heart of today’s most pressing challenges — from renewable energy and environmental monitoring to the growing role of sensors and autonomous systems in defence. The aisles were buzzing with activity, and the exhibitors were busy from dawn to dusk.’

Madeline Lee, Chair of Marelec 2025, held alongside Ocean Business, described the events as ‘dynamic’, with ‘creative, audience-interactive presentations’.

‘These included engaging talks and posters from students and early-career professionals, who showcased a wide range of innovations in marine electromagnetics – from magnetic navigation to controlled source EM imaging of rift-margins. We hope attendees left with valuable insights and connections to support their work.’

Show organiser Cheri Arvonio said Ocean Business 2025 had exceeded all expectations: ‘The team have been totally blown away by all the incredible feedback and we’re very proud to have created such a special show for the ocean community.

‘It was wonderful to see so many friends, Ocean Business regulars and emerging talent, reflecting the rapid pace of development in the industry.

‘For all three days there was a real buzz, inside and outside the main exhibition spaces, and with the added bonus of glorious sunshine!’

The acquisition expands the products and solutions offered by Teledyne Marine, a leading-edge subsea technology company. It sees Teledyne provide customers with a wider range of underwater solutions.

The countdown to next week’s Ocean Business 2023 is on!

This time next week, Ocean Business 2023 will be in full swing, with three days of the very latest ocean technologies, new product launches, dockside demonstrations and networking opportunities with marine industry professionals from around the world.

With more than 300 manufacturers and service providers booked for the sold-out exhibition, this year’s edition of the global technology and science show for the marine sector is set to attract record crowds.

On day one, a line-up of industry leaders will share their insights during a free to attend conference, which will look at how the ocean science community is meeting challenges in the blue economy.

And a packed schedule of networking and social events – from the Wine Trail to the International B2B Matchmaking sessions – will ensure show-goers can catch up around the clock.

The exhibition, which runs from April 18-20 at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, is open to all visitors for free by registering online at www.oceanbusiness.com.

Stakeholders have described Ocean Business as a ‘must attend’ event on the international ocean technology calendar, offering invaluable access to ground-breaking industry developments.

From the development phase onwards, wave data is needed to calculate the wave load in order to define the requirements of the platform design. During its operation years, the actual wave climate is logged to determine the expected endurance. Accurate analysis of the possible exploitation period can make an enormous difference in cost.

During exploitation, real-time wave information is used to make operational decisions. The motions of the ocean surface is of great influence on activities like maintenance and supply.

The onboard wave radar measures the waves as they are encountered by the ship itself. This data is ideally used to determine the operational limitations of the vessel in all conditions. Therefore, the efficiency of the operations will be boosted while the costs are kept low (compared to water-based solutions). Besides, a vessel in transit can adjust its speed and course to avoid critical headings.

Marine Sampling Holland B.V. (MSH) is specialist in offshore geotechnical, geological and environmental research. We have dedicated seabed Cone Penetration Test systems (CPT) for in-situ testing and a variety of dedicated equipment for seabed sampling.

We are specialized in geotechnical, geological and environmental research of offshore subsurface, riverbeds and sedimentary harbour and canal deposits. We have gained over 40 years worldwide experience, from the Arctic to the Antarctic area and all seas and oceans in between. We have several state-of-the-art units and other equipment to carry out the research. We also provide consultancy for a wide range of offshore projects.

For accurate underwater research we conduct cpt's and sampling with state-of-the-art equipment. In our laboratory a wide range of tests can be performed on the collected soil samples. We also provide consultancy for a wide range of offshore projects.

The Cone Penetration Test (CPT) is used for in-situ geotechnical characterisation of ground. It involves the measurement of the resistance of ground to steady and continuous penetration of a cone penetrometer with an angle of 60° and equipped with internal sensors. The measurements comprise penetration depth, cone resistance, sleeve friction and, optionally, pore pressure and inclination from vertical. These measurements permit interpretation of ground conditions.

Sampling of the sea floor is conducted for the reconnaissance of sedimentological or chemical composition.  We have a broad range of equipment available to conduct superficial or deap-sea floor (untill 20 m) sampling.

For lowering equipment to the seabed, we have winches available with cable lengths between 1,000 to 5,000 m. A containerised mobile workshed allows the drilling technicians to perform on-board repairs when needed.

In our own laboratory a wide range of geotechnical and geohydrological tests can be carried out on the samples. To perform laboratory tests abroad we also have a specially equipped mobile laboratory.

Marine Sampling Holland has a dedicated team of marine geologists, geotechnical engineers and technical staff, providing acquisition and advice on soil investigation, laboratory testing and determination of geotechnical parameters for a wide range of offshore projects. With most advanced sampling equipment soil samples of the sea bed are collected, and our licenced geotechnical and geochemical laboratory is determining the required geotechnical parameters.

Special subsea cables for INGV

Harvest Technology delivers 24/7 live-streamed, deep-sea asset monitoring system using smart buoy

Australian-headquartered Harvest Technology Group Limited has successfully developed a bespoke solution for an oil and gas exploration company, enabling access to real-time data from one of the most remote places on the planet – the sea floor.

The next-generation system uses acoustic transfer technology to securely transmit data 24/7 from a monitoring structure on the sea floor to a “smart buoy” at the surface. The smart buoy acts as a modem to communicate data back onshore via mobile or satellite link – at a fraction of the bandwidth typically required, alleviating the challenge of relying on retrospective data to make critical operational decisions.

“Harvest’s Nodestream™ protocol allows customers to receive a live video feed of their subsea assets from anywhere via any mobile device with Internet access,” says Head of Harvest’s Solution Architecture, Jimmy Dean. "Another important feature is the ability to alert onshore headquarters when there is a major change in sensor readings, so customers can respond quickly in emergencies or monitor until intervention is required,” he explains.

The technology is self-powered so it can operate for several years without the need for in-person inspection and maintenance, removing people from unsafe environments, reducing carbon emissions and eliminating the high costs associated with traditional subsea monitoring.

“Leading operators are adopting technology to gain a competitive edge,” says Harvest's Product Design and Delivery Lead, Jason King. “Shipping, ports, oil and gas exploration, renewable energy, offshore wind farms, aquaculture, and environmental researchers know you need the best data to help make decisions, and the best data isn’t yesterday’s data, it’s live-streamed data.”

Harvest's research and development (R&D) is conducted in-house by its 20 developers. Many have first-hand experience working in remote offshore operations, away from loved ones and onshore expertise. This drives them to solve challenges when operating remotely.

Last year, Harvest invested nearly $5 million in R&D, plus $1 million to purpose-build its innovation hub in Perth’s Technology Park.

 


BIRNS introduces breakthrough new subsea cable assembly data rates of 9+Gbits/Sec

The BIRNS team has recently developed exclusive deep submergence cable constructed for Cat 8.2 use, and deep submergence cable assemblies with data transfer rates of 9.4+/- 0.1 Gigabits per second. Performance testing proved that data consistently transmitted at this rate over the entire range of pressures from 0 to 8700 PSI/600 bar (6000m equivalent depth). The initial pin configuration in the 6km-rated BIRNS Millennium™ connector series tested for the capability is the BIRNS 3M-16, a configuration with twelve 22-AWG data contacts and four 16 AWG contacts for power. Additional high data-rate configurations in the series are expected to be introduced soon, using the exclusive BIRNS 52A-278 cable.

The team at BIRNS developed the revolutionary new ultra-high speed cable assembly capability in answer to industry demands for true Gigabit data transfer for advanced subsea vehicles. “We were recently asked by a customer if it was possible to develop a system with transfer rates up to 10Gb/s,” said Eric Birns, President and CEO of BIRNS. “After exhaustive testing, we believe our new cable assembly technology actually exceeds that rate—however, existing computer technology limits accurately testing anything above 9.4Gb/s. We are thrilled to be leading the industry with these new proven data transfer speeds, and look forward to expanding upon it.”

Controlling the future of maritime operations

As maritime stakeholders increasingly look to uncrewed vessel technology to complete a wider range of offshore survey, surveillance and inspection tasks, the systems that are used to control these flexible platforms are developing apace.

Unmanned surface vessels (USVs) offer a low impact, non-invasive and cost-effective solution for an industry that has set itself ambitious net zero emission goals, and the technology is now established on numerous commercial projects around the world.

Designing and building uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) is complex and challenging. Hundreds of decisions relating to mission goals, payload requirements, power budget, hull design, communication systems and propulsion control and management need to be made, analysed and implemented.

Dynautics provides Vessel Control System (VCS) and autopilot technology that seamlessly integrates into third party drive and motor control systems. It work closely with USV manufacturers to ensure that onboard control systems and their complex integration protocols are robust, efficient and above all provide optimal functionality and redundancy.

A selection of Dynautics' recent MK4 (SPECTRE) and VCS (SPECTRE Plus) projects are outlined below.

Triple engine control for Singapore Navy

In 2021 Dynautics became a Mercury Marine dealer, giving it direct access to the company’s G3 engine set up software which is a critical factor in calibrating and optimising engine performance. This was quickly followed by an opportunity to work on a triple Mercury engine (900hp) VCS for the Republic of Singapore Navy’s uncrewed security and surveillance craft.

It was a challenging project with a tight timeframe, but by leveraging Dynautics' experience with Mercury’s control protocol it was able to deliver its MK4 autopilot with Mercury interface module, remote control handset, wiring harness and Dynautics Remote Control Windows (RCW) application for remote route planning. All equipment was fully installed, calibrated and subject to sea trials in time for the Navy’s mission.

From clouds to waves with SPECTRE

ALTI, a world-leading provider of VTOL aircraft based in South Africa, serves the civil and military sectors with UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) for commercial and industrial applications. In 2022, the ALTI team embarked on a mission to bring their 10 years of experience and hard-won expertise on unmanned aircraft operations around the world to the design of a marine USV.

Due to the ambitious timeline of the project, the team needed a control solution that they could fit themselves. Dynautics delivered a SPECTRE MK4 VCS, complete with wiring harness, interfaces and all necessary components that was ready to install. This plug and play solution dovetailed into ALTI’s existing communications system, giving the team a clear development and delivery path. Diagnostics took place remotely to progress the retrofit installation.

Despite ALTI not having first-hand experience of working on the water, any installation challenges were quickly solved with Dynautics remote support.

Royal Navy vessel conversions

In its drive to leverage autonomous technology in the future of naval operations, the UK’s Royal Navy is converting some of its vessels to have unmanned functionality. This cost-effective development approach allows them to make use of commercial electronics and low NRE (non-recurring engineering) costs, speeding up the time it takes to get uncrewed craft operational.

The Royal Navy has, to date, placed two VCS orders with Dynautics. Dr Alison Little, senior project engineer at Dynautics, developed custom vessel control firmware for their unique behaviour requirements.

Precise drive control for 12m cat

A Netherlands-based bespoke catamaran designer and builder recently enlisted Dynautics for the remote control of a 12m catamaran vessel with azimuth thrusters and twin water jets. As well as designing the VCS, Dynautics also advised on overall system architecture, design and the purchase of ancillary parts. Dynautics developed custom CAN communication firmware to provide precise control of the drive system and collision avoidance software was optimised with radar partners Simrad and Cambridge Pixel.

With the client’s new hull design, transmission and power management arrangement, agility and collaboration were key on this project. Teamwork and strong partnerships are hard-wired into Dynautics’ culture and this was a great example of those values at work.
