Greensea IQ Awarded $1.9 Million NAVSEA Contract for Coupled ROV and Manipulator Control

Greensea IQ, a leader in ocean robotics technology, has announced a strategic partnership with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) to provide greater diversity of access and accelerate scientific innovation and discovery in the ocean. This operational collaboration with WHOI’s Deep Submergence Laboratory (DSL) and the National Deep Submergence Facility (NDSF), hosted at WHOI, combines Greensea IQ's class-leading expertise in navigation, robotics, remote operations, and user interface systems with WHOI's outstanding reputation as a world leader in deep-sea exploration capabilities and expertise in the design and construction of underwater systems for scientific research. The partnership will create scalable systems to support a wide range of oceanographic research, increasing access to the deep ocean. In addition, technologies and systems developed under this partnership will focus on improving operational efficiency, increasing compatibility with existing systems, and creating and supporting the tele-operation of ROVs.

The primary objective of the partnership between Greensea IQ and NDSF is to create an environment of open collaboration that will facilitate the integration of existing as well as new subsea platforms, that will benefit all of science and discovery in the ocean. Greensea IQ’s open architecture platform will provide the backbone for these developments. The adoption of common standards, tools, and technologies that are shared throughout the community via NDSF will modernize and strengthen the deep submergence capability within the US.

RBR Collaborates with Alcatel Submarine Networks to support SMART cable innovation

RBR is pleased to announce an exciting collaboration with global subsea communication experts Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) and seismic instrumentation leaders Nanometrics for the development of advanced innovative solutions as part of ASN’s Climate Change solution. This collaboration sets a new benchmark for subsea cable technology, combining cutting-edge innovations and unparalleled expertise for the Scientific Monitoring and Reliable Telecommunications (SMART) cable market.

ASN, with an existing installed base of over 800,000 km of optical submarine cables worldwide, selected RBR as a leader in precision environmental sensors with a proven track record of over 50 years. A specialised team at RBR worked closely with ASN engineers to develop and refine the simplicity of the system provided, which is based on our well-proven BPR|zero technology.

The custom variant of the existing BPR|zero, intended for submarine cable usage, has been miniaturised and also ruggedised in order to handle the extreme environment experienced during normal cable-laying ship deployments. The system is intended to be housed adjacent to a normal repeater housing and used with a simplified interface with a minimal command set.

All components are tested to far greater than normal operating cycles, given the intended harsh deployment conditions and 25-year undersea life requirement, but still provide the same A-zero-A drift correction as the elder sibling whose output has a resolution of 10ppb (1Hz sampling period) and is therefore suitable for tsunami monitoring and subsidence detection.

National Oceanography Centre trialling fossil-free marine fuels

The UK’s National Oceanography Centre (NOC) is trialling the use of a fossil-free marine diesel to fuel the Royal Research Ships (RRS) James Cook and Discovery.

Use of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), made from used vegetable oils and fats and non-food crops, is able to significantly reduce net CO2 vessel emissions, compared to conventional diesel fuel.

The trial is funded by the UK’s Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), which owns the two vessels, in support of a UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) goal to achieve net zero emission operations by 2040.

HVO can be used as a “drop-in” replacement in marine engines and because it’s made from already used products and non-food crops, it’s life-cycle CO2 emissions are much lower than fossil fuel.

Kevin Williams, Head of Research Ships Engineering at NOC, says, “As a research organisation, NOC is focused on understanding and protecting our ocean. Reducing our own environmental footprint is a key part of that and the carbon emissions from our vessels is a major part of that.”

During the trial, HVO is replacing the low sulphur marine gas oil (LSMGO) NOC normally uses. HVO is one of the more stable biofuels, which means it’s suitable for the different conditions NOC vessels operate in, from high temperature regions to the Arctic.

However, there are some challenges around its use, such as cost and availability, especially in the remote places NOC operates, says Williams.

The HVO trial is part of wider emissions reduction work at NOC. For the vessels, this includes assessing the use of batteries onboard, to reduce the use of the engines during scientific operations, and a focus on marine operations planning, to reduce transit time and more efficient routing based on weather.

Kongsberg Discovery names Sandeep Sandhu as the new Country Manager for the US and Canada

Sandeep Sandhu enters the new role of Country Manager in Kongsberg Discovery for the US and Canada.
Sandeep Sandhu has held the position as General Manager for Kongsberg Discovery Canada since August 2023. In his new role he will also oversee Kongsberg Discovery’s activities in the USA.

 

Kongsberg Discovery develops technology to ensure sustainable management of marine resources, monitor climate change and critical infrastructure, and safeguard national security. It is a business area within the KONGSBERG group and has been present in Canada and the US for almost 30 years.

 

The USA company is also changing its name from Kongsberg Underwater Technology Inc

(KUTL) to Kongsberg Discovery US, LLC.

 

Plans for growth

President Martin Wien Fjell of Kongsberg Discovery is pleased to see an internal candidate take on more responsibility for a great region.

 

"Sandhu and his leadership team have expanded the business in Canada. I am confident he is the right person to lead Kongsberg Discovery and grow the business in the US, as well as continuing to develop the market in Canada," he says.

 

Prior to joining Kongsberg Discovery, Sandhu has extensive leadership experience in the technology sector. He entered the new role on September 1.

A strong team in the US

Sandeep Sandhu was appointed as the interim general manager of KUTL, now Kongsberg Discovery US, LLC, in July of this year. The head office is located in Lynnwood, Seattle, and there are about 35 people based in this office, in addition to a team throughout the US. Sandhu is eager to take on this role and to further develop the ambitious plans set by the team.

 

“I have had this responsibility for just a few weeks, so I am eager to meet more people and to delve deeper into numerous issues. The American team is robust, and I believe that together we will achieve great success moving forward,” he states.

 

Sandhu will continue to serve as general manager of Kongsberg Discovery Canada. He will collaborate with the management team and the board to determine the best organizational structure for the market and customers.


Motive Offshore acquires Acteon Group’s Aquatic

Motive Offshore Group, which specialises in rental, inspection and engineering equipment for the energy sector, announces its acquisition of Aquatic, a global leader in laying and retrieving flexible products from the seabed, previously owned by marine energy and infrastructure services company Acteon. The deal will increase Motive’s rental fleet and provide a full back-deck offering globally.

Motive will undertake Aquatic’s operations in the UK, Singapore, the US, Australia, and Norway, marking a significant milestone in its global growth strategy. The deal, in response to burgeoning market demand, will provide customers with access to a wider range of flex lay equipment for offshore telecoms, offshore wind farms, and oil and gas fields. Bolstered by investment from H2 Equity Partners in 2022, the acquisition aligns with Motive’s continued ambitions to target strategic locations, diversify its rental fleet, and generate 75% of revenue from renewables by 2025. The business is on track with this target, achieving 50% of renewable revenue YTD in 2024.

As part of the agreement, Motive will also acquire and invest in Aquatic’s facility in Peterhead, Scotland. The hub will become an additional base in Scotland for Motive, alongside its Boyndie and Kintore facilities.
