Facility Expansions: In August 2024, Teledyne Gavia, a world-class manufacturer of AUVs, significantly expanded operations in Kopavogur, Iceland. New facilities, additional staff, and the appointment of a Gavia Service & Support Manager address growing demand for both compact Gavia systems and larger Osprey and SeaRaptor AUVs. These upgrades reduce lead times, enhance production capabilities, and improve customer service efficiency.
North American Growth: Recognizing the increasing need for support in North America, Teledyne Marine opened a dedicated AUV Repair Center at its North Falmouth, Massachusetts facility. This center ensures faster repairs and shorter turnaround times to keep vehicles operational and effective for customers across the region.
Expanding Support in the UK: To better serve the growing UK customer base, Teledyne Marine is establishing a service center for APEX floats, Slocum gliders, and Gavia AUVs at the Teledyne Raymarine facility in Fareham, England. Scheduled to open in Q2 2025, this site will offer repair and field service capabilities, guaranteeing top-tier, local support for UK clients.
Strengthened Engineering Team: The North Falmouth service and engineering team welcomed new members, including two Glider Field Applications Engineers, an Acoustics Sales Support Engineer, and a Profiling Float Applications Engineer. These experts bring specialized knowledge and customer-focused dedication to bolster Teledyne Marine’s service capabilities.

Boxfish Robotics Introduces Reliable and Easy-to-Use Hovering AUV for Marine Research
Boxfish Robotics is proud to announce the launch of their first generation of fully autonomous tetherless hovering Boxfish AUV (Hovering Autonomous Underwater Vehicle), featuring cutting-edge advancements in autonomy that set a new standard in underwater exploration.
The Boxfish AUV is equipped with Boxfish’s latest proprietary autonomy software, allowing it to operate with precision and efficiency. The easy-to-use graphical user interface, SafePath Planner, offers a high level of customisation and ensures that the AUV can navigate complex underwater environments with ease. Greensea IQ’s EverClean Approved as Hull Grooming Provider for GIT Coatings

Greensea IQ, a pioneer in proactive in-water hull cleaning technology, is proud to announce that its EverClean service has been officially approved as a certified hull grooming provider for vessels coated with GIT Coatings’ advanced foul release systems.
The approval, granted by Lloyd’s Register, confirms that EverClean meets the requirements to groom hulls protected by GIT Coatings’ sustainable and biocide-free coatings, such as XGIT-FUEL™. Grooming is defined as a proactive measure of periodical removal of microfouling (slime) to prevent the development of macrofouling on ships’ hulls.
This certification strengthens the shared commitment between Greensea IQ and GIT Coatings to deliver high-performance, environmentally responsible hull maintenance solutions to commercial vessel operators worldwide. The Enhanced Type Approval ensures that XGIT-Fuel maintains its performance before and after grooming with EverClean, with no roughness increase and no thickness loss.

With less than a month to go until Ocean Business 2025, exhibitors are gearing up to unveil exciting new products set to shape the future of ocean science and technology.

From Canada, satellite communications expert MetOcean Telematics will launch STREAM IMT, created to simplify global connectivity with fast, reliable and low-latency communication that works anywhere in the world.
Nine North, meanwhile, will show how its immersive 3D visualisations bring the ocean to life. The brainchild of ocean explorer Sylvain Pascaud and software engineer and cinematographer Matthieu Straub, Nine North has developed cutting-edge tools that empower researchers and industry experts to explore, map and understand the deep-sea environment.
Also launching at Ocean Business is McLane Research Laboratories’ newest eDNA sampler, the Suspended Particulate Rosette sampler (SuPR), which enables operator programmed selections that include total volume, flow rate and sample collection time, targeting phytoplankton and particulate trace metals, as well as eDNA.
Leaders in autonomous underwater inspection and exploration, Tethys Robotics will showcase Tethys ONE, which is equipped with advanced sensors and imaging technology, facilitating detailed mapping and analysis of oceanic infrastructure.
And, from France, AGISTAR will reveal how the innovative design of its BX-USV platform makes it perfectly suited for the development of advanced robotic systems, offering a low-cost, sustainable solution for various maritime tasks.

Ocean Business 2025 conference programme announced

Preparations for Ocean Business 2025 are well underway, with a bigger than ever exhibition and a packed two-day conference programme, more details of which can now be unveiled.
The line-up of industry experts reflects the scope and ambition of the sector as it gathers together for the global marine technology and science show, to be held at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in Southampton from April 8-10.
Keynote speakers on day one of the conference, taking place on Tuesday, April 8, include John Siddorn, NOC chief executive, examining the centre’s role in industry engagement; Andy Liddell of Defence Equipment and Support, exploring the future of autonomous systems in the Royal Navy; and Commander Mark Butcher, representing Navy Develop and its many technical collaborations.
At the end of the morning session, the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) will present its coveted Business Person of the Year Award.
After lunch, Becky Conway, CEO of the Hydrographic Society UK & Ireland, will lead a discussion on Future Skills for the Next Generation of Ocean Technology, along with Fugro Academy’s Mike Redmayne, while Chris White of the Australian Maritime College will offer an Antipodean perspective on training in autonomous maritime systems.
Following an early careers platform for student hydrographers, two pan-sector panels, both mediated by Conference Chair Sue John, will look at Space and the Marine Environment, with the NOC’s Paul Bell investigating the Remote Sensing Revolution, plus presentations from the European Space Agency, the Space South Central Enterprise Network, and Surrey Satellite Technology.
The Future of our Ocean is the overall theme of day two, on Wednesday, April 9, chaired by BP’s Mark Poole and with a roll-call of international innovators, from RS Aqua’s Ryan Mowat, to Neil Manning of Cellular Robotics Canada, and Adam Hamilton of MMA Offshore, Australia, addressing everything from intelligent underwater acoustics, to long-endurance AUVs, and the challenges of renewable energy surveys.
Also not to be missed, in the second session on this theme, chaired by Trish Buxton of Thurn Group, are talks by Port of London hydrographer John Dillon-Leetch, on meeting the needs of the UK’s number one port; Andrijana Horvat from Hidrocibalae Croatia with an update on AI’s role in security challenges; Adam Parnell, of safety at sea charity CHIRP, focusing on incident reporting and saving lives; and Sam Taylor, of Ocean Infinity, charting the course of the Armada fleet of unmanned surface robots.
Continuing the Future of our Ocean theme, David Parker and Rob Clarke of the UK Centre for Seabed Mapping and UK Hydrographic Office will be joined by Nicola Robinson of ORE Catapult, the UK technology innovation and research centre for offshore wind, wave and tidal energy, and Ryan Mowat, SMI’s Marine Science and Technology Council Director.
All will then reconvene for the final panel session of the day, chaired by Mike King of Sulmara Subsea, to consider how developments in the ocean science community are disrupting the status quo.

£4 m to boost marine robotics research capabilities
The UK’s National Oceanography Centre (NOC) has been awarded £4 million to bring next-generation sensing capabilities to its marine autonomous systems fleet for use in advancing sustainable ocean science.
The funding, from the Natural Environment Research Council’s (NERC’s) Future Marine Research Infrastructure (FMRI) programme, will support three projects by leading scientists and engineers at NOC to develop advanced sensors targeting 10 different biogeochemical essential ocean variables, from physics to nutrients and carbon. These will then be integrated on to autonomous underwater vehicles such as gliders and NOC’s Autosub Long Range (ALR).
These advances will then be made available to the UK marine science community through the UK’s National Marine Equipment Pool, the largest centralised marine scientific equipment pool in Europe, as part of the National Marine Facilities, managed by NOC.
“This investment underscores NOC’s position as a global leader in marine technology capability and innovation, accelerating the development and uptake of sensors with the capacity to transform marine science through the deep expertise in our Ocean Technology & Engineering group,” says Julie Robidart, who leads the group.
“By translating our innovation into science-ready autonomous capabilities, we’re supporting FMRI’s vision for a modern, versatile and sustainable marine research infrastructure.”
“By accelerating the adoption of sensor innovation, this investment will help to position the UK at the cutting-edge of marine research capabilities,” says Kristian Thaller, FMRI Programme Director. “It will ensure that UK marine science can meet society’s urgent need to observe, understand and predict changes in the ocean.”
The funding from NERC’s FMRI programme supports its Accelerating Adoption of Sensor Innovation (AASI) initiative, which aims to show how innovation in marine sensor technology can be translated into deployable autonomous research capabilities.
The funding will support three cutting-edge sensor development projects, the integration of these sensors into autonomous platforms, enhancing data management systems and targeting comprehensive validation trials by summer 2026.
The three sensor projects are:
Autonomous Sensors for fast In-situ Measurements of nutrient Ocean Variables (ASIMOV) – led by Dr Allison Schaap, will increase performance, speed, and reliability of nitrate and phosphate lab-on-chip sensors for use on Teledyne Slocum gliders.
Marine Sensors for Carbon Observations (MaSCOt) – led by Dr Socratis Loucaides, is a project to advance and optimise for use on gliders high-accuracy and precision lab-on-chip sensors for the marine carbonate system.
SixSense – led by Dr Andrew Morris, and as previously announced, will create a miniature multi-parameter sensor capable of measuring six key parameters covering biogeochemical, physical and environmental measurements (conductivity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pressure, pH and Eh), to be integrated onto ALRs, gliders and other platforms, such as submersibles and profiling floats.
The FMRI programme mission is to revolutionise marine research infrastructure to deliver cutting-edge marine research capabilities so that science can serve society’s need to observe, understand and predict change in the ocean.

Among the highlights this year, ecoSUB Robotics, a division of Planet Ocean, will present its range of advanced, affordable, low logistics AUVs, deployed in ocean research, offshore energy and defence markets, and currently supporting the Nippon Foundation’s initiative to map the entire ocean floor by 2030.
Sonardyne will provide insights into its recently launched shallow water dynamic positioning reference system, which joins the SPRINT-Nav family, the standard for underwater vehicle navigation worldwide.
European leader in naval navigation Exail will highlight its advanced systems offering precise navigation, safe operations, and real-time data acquisition, delivering reliable performance from surface missions to ultra-deep waters.
Norwegian underwater instrumentation pioneer Norbit Subsea, meanwhile, will introduce the WBMS X, the latest addition to its innovative multibeam sonar family, designed with ultimate flexibility to tackle the most complex survey challenges.
And from the US, Greensea IQ, a leader in subsea robotics and defence solutions, is showcasing its Bayonet 250 amphibious underwater ground vehicle, deployed by the US Marine Corps for safer and more effective explosive ordnance disposal operations.
Other familiar big-name suppliers, including Teledyne Marine, Kongsberg Discovery and Nortek, will be out in force alongside newer entrants to the industry to preview emerging technologies in this fast-changing space.
