Embedded Software Engineer (£40k - £45k)

Our ambitious growth plan has generated an exciting opportunity for a talented embedded software engineer to join our development team, responsible for contributing to the design and testing of new additions to our product line.

Job Profile

You will work within our development team, designing new SONAR products, taking ideas from concept through to fully production-engineered and manufacture-ready solutions. You will develop embedded software/firmware for various applications including demanding real-time data acquisition. You will have a strong knowledge of digital signal processing, algorithm development and high efficiency coding techniques. You will also be required to develop, update, and maintain various utility programs which support product use configuration and testing.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Carrying out software engineering tasks (both embedded and application)
• Software design, coding, debugging, profiling, troubleshooting, and testing
• Create and/or contribute to design, production and user documentation
• Modelling sonar acquisition systems and helping explore possibilities for future products
• Work with other engineers to perform product integration, system testing, acoustic measurements and offshore trials
• Providing technical assistance to internal and external customers if/when required
• Working within an ISO9001-accredited quality management system
• Complying with GeoAcoustics’ values and adherence to all company policy and procedures, including Health & Safety and Environmental Management

In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed, the job holder is required to perform other duties assigned by their manager from time-to-time, as may be reasonably required of them.

Qualifications

Essential skills and qualifications for this role are:

• Degree or equivalent in software engineering
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience developing embedded systems or other hardware orientated software
• Strong technical, analytical, problem-solving and time management skills
• Coding in C/C++ (ranging from hardware specific C to fully object orientated C++)
• Ability to write Windows based utility applications in C++ using both Qt and Visual Studio
• Coding efficiently for high-speed applications (using concurrency, multithreading etc.)
• In depth communication protocol knowledge (including SPI, I2C, Ethernet (TCP & UDP) & RS232)
• Good knowledge of DSP techniques (e.g. downsampling, mixing, various filter types, etc.)
• Proficient in MATLAB (signal processing)
• Knowledge of scripting languages such as Tcl, lua and windows batch
• Good technical documentation skills
• Good team player with excellent communication skills
• Willingness to undertake occasional travel within UK and overseas to support customers
• You must have the right to live and work in the UK

Desirable skills:

• Single-board Linux based computer platform deployment
• High-level Synthesis FPGA implementation
• PIC microcontroller development (using MPLAB XC and/or CCS compilers)
• Analogue and digital peripheral circuit design
• Previous experience of realtime data acquisition systems
• Knowledge and experience of SONAR equipment and applications

Senior Hydrographic Specialist

The UKHO receives large but fluctuating quantities of bathymetric data throughout the year. It is important that the quality of this data is verified before it is incorporated into Caris BathyDataBASE and passed to the charting areas. Being mindful of timescales and the different pressures of both internal and external demands, the post holder is required to be capable of skilled verification and peer review of data prior to entry into the bathymetric database and to provide advice on all aspects of survey processing matters.

As a Senior Hydrographic Specialist, your primary remit will be the verification of all bathymetric data received by the UKHO. Depending on the business need you will also have the opportunity to support the Royal Navy and the UKHO’s Data Acquisition Team by undertaking, leading, or assisting in the client representation of UKHO commissioned and contracted surveys, as well as providing consultancy and training to external organisations and UKHO visitors.

Hydrographic Surveyor

Fugro recruiting for a Hydrographic Surveyor to join our geophysical survey department based in Portchester.

As a Hydrographic Surveyor, you’ll be responsible for processing hydrographic data, working with teams in the field and Project Surveyors to deliver data to clients.

It’s an excellent opportunity gaining exposure to projects, working in a range of markets (including renewables, UXO, pipeline inspection) and processing different hydrographic data types. The role combines time at the office and offshore on Fugro vessels.

Typical Week:

Desirable

• Experience of industry-standard hydrographic processing software, such as Teledyne CARIS, Fugro Starfix or Applanix POSPac;
• Offshore/practical experience in oil/gas, ocean science, renewables and/or survey industries;
• Able to work offshore for periods of up to 4 weeks.

Project Hydrographic Surveyor

Fugro is recruiting for a Project Surveyor to join our world leading geophysical department based in Portchester.

You’ll be responsible for data quality; working closely with teams in the field to deliver the project objectives to the contracted schedule.

The Project Surveyor leads, coaches and mentors members of the team; promoting quality and ensuring that Fugro deliver industry-leading data to clients.

Whilst this is an office-based role in Portchester, the Project Surveyor will get the opportunity to experience the offshore environment, working at the forefront of marine geophysical science, from time to time.

This job is for you if you:

• Have strong technical understanding of hydrographic data sets;
• Have experience of hydrographic data processing and report writing;
• Have excellent attention to detail;
• Are confident managing others and leading a team
• Are highly numerate and literate

Daily you’ll be working closely with the project team; including the client, vessel team and surveyors.

A typical day:

• Three days a week spent data processing, undertaking data QC and providing feedback to colleagues;
• Half day managing the hydrographic processing element of a project; tracking progress, planning tasks, assigning resources and managing the project delivery schedule;
• Half day leading or attending meetings with the client, Project Manager and project team as the project technical lead;
• Half day writing or completing QC on reports;
• Half day assisting the vessel with calibrations, technical issues or planning.

Experience:

Essential

• Qualification in hydrography, ocean science or closely related subject;
• Industry experience;
• Strong knowledge and experience of hydrographic survey techniques
• Experience of industry-standard hydrographic processing software

Desirable

• Experience in line management;
• Experience in project management;
• Able to work offshore for periods of up to 4 weeks;
