Focus on ‘The Energy Field of the Future’ at joint industry event on 10 November 2022 in Aberdeen
The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA), The Society for Underwater Technology (SUT), and The Hydrographic Society UK and Ireland (THS: UK&I) Scotland Branch are jointly holding their well-respected joint industry seminar on 10 November 2022 in Aberdeen, UK. This year the seminar has a highly topical theme – ‘The Energy Field of the Future’.
As IMCA’s Technical Director, Stephen Peet, explained: “The energy industry is currently experiencing a period of significant change, with ever increasing focus on sustainability, while marine and underwater technologies continue to advance.
“With this scale of change ongoing, what does the field of the future look like, and how close are we to achieving ‘Net Zero’ targets? What transformative technologies and strategies will have the greatest impact to: operational efficiency, value creation, and Net Zero operations? How do we accelerate the integration of these solutions within our existing offshore assets? Our keynote speaker will certainly have some interesting views on these topics.”
Following a networking breakfast, the packed day will get off to a flying start with a keynote address by Greg Jones of Total E&P UK. who is working with the Net Zero Technology Centre to assist companies to develop new technology and to support the move to Net Zero.
A dozen other speakers then take part in four sessions – the first on Visualisation; the second in the morning is on Robotics, in which IMCA’s Technical Adviser – Remote Systems and ROV, Andre Rose, will speak on ‘Development of USV Technologies’. Earlier this year, IMCA published Safe and Efficient Use of an Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV)’ (IMCA M 257). in order to establish best practice for the safe and efficient use of this new and rapidly developing technology.
Following lunch, which provides another networking opportunity, the topic turns to Communication; then Alternative Energy follows bringing an informative, stimulating, and constructive day to an end.

Aquatec will host Marine Measurement Forum’s 65th edition on 30th November 2022
Through-water communications and subsea integrity specialist Aquatec is organising MMF65. The biannual event will occur on Wednesday, 30th November 2022, at Highfield Park, Hampshire.
The long-standing Marine Measurement Forum is a series of one-day, non-profit-making events that provide opportunities for networking and the informal exchange of ideas, knowledge, techniques and developments across an extensive range of marine scientific measurement activities.
During an MMF day, a series of short presentations on diverse marine measurement topics are interspersed with refreshment breaks that offer delegates the chance to network with like-minded colleagues. Businesses and Institutions across the UK ocean technology sector take turns to organise MMF meetings. Aquatec was selected to host the 65th event, which will be themed Innovation in Measurement.
MMF 65 will be held in the peaceful village of Heckfield, north of Hampshire and close to Aquatec House. The venue selected is the historical Highfield Park, previously known as the Manor of Heckfield. This estate dates back as far as 1166.
The Marine Measurement Forum is well known for its history of quality programmes comprising expert views on scientific research, new developments, innovative instrumentation, and survey projects, among other topics. Continuing with the Forum’s tradition of delivering interesting live content from specialists, MMF 65 will feature 10-13 volunteer speakers who will share their insights on Innovation in Measurement through 15-minute presentations.

Teledyne Marine to Host In-Person Technology Workshop on Lake Michigan
Teledyne Marine is pleased to announce that they will host their first in-person workshop since 2019. This two-day event, branded as their “Teledyne Marine Workshop – Tech on the Lakes”, will take place on September 27-28, 2022 and will be co-hosted by Northwestern Michigan College's Marine Center, located in Traverse City on Lake Michigan.
Teledyne Marine’s topic experts will provide technical and application training, as well as on-water demonstrations of an array of products from their vehicles, instruments, and imaging groups. Particular focus will be paid to inland water applications; however, presentations and technologies will be equally applicable to ocean-going applications.
The multi-track workshop will be structured to allow for ample opportunities for industry networking, as well as one-on-one or group meetings with Teledyne’s technical and sales teams to discuss user challenges and solutions.
This workshop coincides with Lakebed 2030, which takes place September 29-30, allowing visitors to leverage their week by attending both highly relevant workshops hosted at the same location.

South Devon College pioneers maritime autonomy training with acquisition of two HydroSurv USVs
South Devon College has acquired two Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USVs) that will give marine autonomy students at its new Marine Academy hands-on experience of remote vessel operation. The USVs were unveiled at the Academy’s opening ceremony in Dartmouth in April, a milestone moment in the history of South Devon College, which is celebrating its 90th birthday this year.
The REAV-16 and REAV-10 USVs, named USV Dart and USV Exe, were built by Exeter-based HydroSurv for research collaborations and demonstrations that catalysed the company’s international growth. HydroSurv has since refitted and upgraded the fully electric, zero emission vessels for use by future students at the Academy, which aims to support industry by delivering a skills pipeline to meet the demands of a rapidly changing maritime sector.
Familiarisation with current and future unmanned vessel innovations will be a key element of the college’s planned marine autonomy training, due to be rolled out across multiple learning levels from September 2022.
Paul Singer, Business and Qualification Development Coordinator at South Devon College said: “The use of USVs in industry is increasing every day and South Devon Marine Academy will be taking a leading role in the development of USV related training, from maintenance and servicing through to in-service operations. Our new workshops and classrooms are just metres from the River Dart, making them the ideal location from which to deliver this training.”
The use of USVs for commercial operation is creating career options for maritime students that did not previously exist. Marine engineers, for example, need to understand their operation, maintenance and propulsion systems. From a programming, cyber security and civil engineering perspective, digital media professionals will also benefit from an awareness of the technology as it becomes widely adopted for a range of data-collection applications.
David Hull, Founder and CEO of HydroSurv said: “Both USVs were originally developed, tested and demonstrated within industrial research projects. These projects focused on platform design, core technology development and industrial showcasing through a series of real-world demonstrations to end-users, equipment manufacturers and academia.
“Following refit and upgrade, the second life use of these USVs has come full circle to support the seeding of new skills that are in strong demand across the ocean technology space. We’re delighted to be partnering with South Devon College, who are putting future specialist skills into the hands of tomorrow's workforce, enabling them to take on important, productive jobs in the sector.”
South Devon College and HydroSurv enjoy a long-standing relationship. As part of a growing Southwest clean maritime cluster, the collaboration is a strong example of how partnerships between academia and the business community are actively addressing the skills gap and opening additional research and development opportunities. HydroSurv currently hosts an apprentice from the college, with another intake planned this year.

Demand for IMarEST accreditation increases across APAC
Jiangsu University of Science and Technology (JUST), and Shanghai Maritime University (SMU), are the latest universities to be granted accreditation for their degree courses by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST). Demand for marine engineering courses to be accredited by the Institute continues to grow with around 100 academic courses from higher education institutions, as well a number of industry schemes accredited globally.
Gwynne Lewis, chief executive of the IMarEST, says: “Institutions who apply for IMarEST accreditation undergo a rigorous process of assessment to ensure that they meet our high standards and deliver globally recognised qualifications that enable students to start their careers and fulfil their potential to be the future leaders of our profession. The success and employability rates of students who have completed our accredited courses is a testament to the high quality of teaching and the growing demand for marine related roles.”
JUST and SMU join a growing number of higher education institutions within China and the wider APAC region that have sought IMarEST accreditation for their courses, including Dalian Maritime University (China), Harbin Engineering University (China), Ningbo University (China), the Ocean University of China, Singapore Institute of Technology, IPB University (Indonesia), and UniKL MIMET (Malaysia).
In addition to increased interest from universities for accreditation, the IMarEST is also seeing an increase in demand for the Institute’s independent assessment of activities that contribute to continuing professional development (CPD), such as training courses or events being offered by companies from across the entirety of the marine sector.
Gwynne concludes: “We work in an ever-evolving sector. New technologies and climate change are bringing new challenges and opportunities and we must support those who are working in the sector by ensuring they have access to high-quality continuing professional development to help them build the skills they need for the future.”

Marine Measurement Forum (MMF) Date Change for 2022 Event
Due to several overlapping engagements, the MMF64 event will now take place in July instead. After a two-year break, the long-standing MMF series of events has finally returned. MMF64 will be held in person in Port Solent Marina (Portsmouth, UK) on 6th July 2022.
The MMF is a series of one-day, non-profit events that provide opportunities for the informal exchange of ideas, knowledge and developments across the marine measurement and ocean technology industries. Businesses and Institutions across the UK ocean technology sector take turns to host MMF meetings, and RS Aqua have been selected to host MMF64.
RS Aqua are accepting speaker abstract submissions for presentation on the day. Up to twelve speakers will be selected, and the theme for this event will be cross-sector collaboration. Presentations that feature insightful stories about collaborative activities are particularly encouraged.

Enter ASL‘s 2022 Early Career Scientist Contest to Win the Use of an Autonomous Scientific Echo Sounder for Three-Months
The goal of this program is to support the oceanographic and limnological research community by lending, free of charge, a calibrated battery-powered Acoustic Zooplankton Fish Profiler™ (AZFP™) (subject to availability either the 125/200/455/769 kHz or the 38/125/200/455 kHz configuration), plus mooring cage and battery for a three-month maximum deployment period along with the support from ASL’s team of experts. This instrument loan program is open to early-career scientists and engineers, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and others involved in oceanographic or freshwater work.
With the unmatched combination of multiple frequency operation, low power and extended endurance, the ASL AZFP offers a new, economical way of obtaining reliable measurements of marine environmental conditions in the water column. The AZFP can monitor the presence and abundance of zooplankton and fish within the water column by measuring the acoustic backscatter returns at multiple ultrasonic frequencies. Other sonar targets realized from the sonar backscatter data include bubbles and suspended sediments. The AZFP is a powerful tool for scientific research and environmental monitoring in oceans, lakes and rivers. For more details on the AZFP, refer to our product brochure.
To apply to this program, send a summary proposal (maximum length 4 pages plus figures and references) of your study and description on how it would benefit from the use of the AZFP's capabilities. The selection criteria involve a number of factors including:
• Relevance of the project: the measurements obtained should advance the understanding of physical and/or biological phenomena of importance to the aquatic environment
• Innovation of the project including scientific merit
• The ability of the party to deploy and recover the instrument
