This conference gives you the opportunity to hear about the latest developments in autonomous and unmanned surface, underwater and aerial survey platforms (operating either alone or in cooperative swarms; in sight or over the horizon) with associated remote survey command and support services, as well as how techniques such as Satellite-Derived Bathymetry (SDB), Crowdsourced Bathymetry (CSB), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Forward-Looking Sonar (FLS) are revolutionising hydrographic data collection, processing, analysis and presentation.

Leading provider of vessel dimensional control surveys GEOSIGHT announces a new initiative for 2022
Leading provider of vessel dimensional control surveys GEOSIGHT has recently announced a new initiative for 2022, to include the offer of vessel dimensional control survey training, alongside the release of a software package called GEOBASE, which is designed to support the conduct of vessel dimensional control surveying, and the subsequent data management and reporting.
Over the past 6 years, GEOSIGHT have combined their vast experience in both land and hydrographic surveying to create their specialist vessel dimensional control survey offering, which is provided to clients on a national and international scale, where accurate and quality assured vessel dimension data is key to project success. GEOSIGHT has operated in over 17 countries since 2016 and has completed in excess of 200 vessel surveys for clients such as DEME Offshore, Boskalis, Fugro, Subsea 7, UTEC, Ocean Infinity and ROVCO to name a few.
In pursuit of improving and standardising vessel dimensional control surveying practices throughout the offshore survey industry, GEOSIGHT are preparing to offer training courses to companies and individuals who want to learn and implement best practice procedures in dimensional control surveying. Training courses will begin from Spring 2022 and will be delivered from GEOSIGHT headquarters in Hampshire, UK or from client offices.
In combination with dimensional control training, GEOSIGHT are pioneering the development of a new software package called GEOBASE which is designed to support the conduct of dimensional control surveying using best practice procedures. Alongside providing automated routines for moving between the different coordinate and rotation conventions used by survey equipment and software manufactures, GEOBASE is designed to expedite the processing and reporting of dimensional control data so results and final reports are delivered quicker, enabling the crucial client sign-off from mobilisation periods.
GEOBASE is being released in Spring 2022 for a period of 12 months as a basic software package at no cost, its operation will also be covered within training courses. GEOBASE will continue development with an ambitious roadmap, integrating new and exciting functionality, including the intelligent hosting of digital twin scan data.

“My personal experiences of conducting dimensional control surveys for the past 18 years including the past 6 years with my colleagues from GEOSIGHT have highlighted a very real need to improve standards in the collection and reporting of vessel dimension data. It is often an afterthought at the end of a mobilisation period, but the repercussions of inaccurate vessel dimensions data are significant. We’re delighted to take this important step in offering training to our industry colleagues, and also in providing a unique software package which will assist in the survey process, and the ongoing management of vessel geometry data which may be provided by a number of different dimensional control surveyors over the vessel or project lifecycle. Our vision is to create an industry standard providing improved subsea data quality and survey efficiencies, and the complete confidence in vessel geometry data from surveyors and their clients.
MMO & PAM TRAINING COURSES
Ocean Science Consulting Limited (OSC) is offering its next Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC)-approved Marine Mammal Observer (MMO), Protected Species Observer (PSO), and Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) training courses in January 2022.
JNCC-certified MMOs comply with UK regulations, and PSOs comply with USA regulations, to minimise the risk of injury and disturbance to marine mammals from various offshore operations. OSC’s MMO course comprises theory and practice, including binocular and range estimation, and role-play sessions. The PAM course comprises theory and practice using PAM equipment in OSC's workshop facilities and/or onboard OSC’s survey vessel (subject to weather). The intention is to run the following courses in-person near Edinburgh at OSC’s Dunbar headquarters:
- JNCC MMO training on 25 January 2022 at a cost of £220 per person, which includes a copy of the 'Marine Mammal Observer and Passive Acoustic Monitoring Handbook'
- BOEM PSO training on the morning of 26 January 2022 at a cost of £100 per person
- PAM training on 26-28 January 2022 at a cost of £450 per person
All courses are capped at a maximum of 10 participants. Prices are exclusive of VAT, which is charged at the current rate. A discounted package price of £700 is offered for participants who wish to attend all three courses (MMO, PSO, and PAM).
Course participants will also receive a discount for purchases of marine binoculars or tripod mounts – these should be ordered in advance of the course to ensure availability.

The announcement of the conference programme and opening of delegate registration coincides with the launch of our new website www.ths-uki.org. The new website is the culmination of our work to re-brand the Society following the membership approving our change of name at this year’s AGM in April.

SUT launches introduction to offshore Geophysics & Geotechnical engineering virtual courses
he Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) has launched a virtual introductory course on offshore site investigation and geotechnical engineering in the offshore environment. This is the online equivalent of the face-to-face course successfully run by the Society’s Offshore Site Investigation Group (OSIG) for a number of years. The online course is spread over four half days for two weeks (Tuesday and Thursday mornings) on 16, 18, 23 and 25 November.
Aimed at non-specialists, it aims to provide a broad overview of the offshore market, and how the data acquired is applied to maximise the value of offshore projects in both the offshore oil and gas and offshore renewable energy sectors.
The face-to-face course has built a formidable reputation explained Chery Burgess, CEO of the SUT:
“The face-to-face course has been running for 25, or so, years and has attracted well in excess of 500 delegates. We are delighted to add an OSIG course to our virtual offerings which also include our Virtual Subsea Awareness Course and an Introduction to Offshore Wind Energy Course, both of which have attracted delegates from around the world.
“The first two days of the OSIG course have a geophysical theme, and then in week two the attention turns to the geotechnical side of things. We have an impressive list of industry and academic experts covering a wide range of topics, from planning an offshore site investigation through technical and operational aspects of data acquisition and reporting, to the practical use of the data in geohazard assessment and foundation design.

Act now to protect coastal communities from rising sea levels

Ahead of COP 26, the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST), is calling for leaders around the world to take action to mitigate the impact on coastal communities and infrastructure of rising sea levels. This includes a recommendation to standardise the way oceans are measured globally to provide the data needed for greater understanding and sustainable management.
The advice comes as the Institute prepares to host its fourth biennial Oceans of Knowledge conference on 26-27 October, the week prior to COP 26. The conference will focus on three themes:
- The sustainable use of the ocean and its resources
- The role of the ocean in natural and engineered climate mitigation
- Rising sea levels and coastal vulnerability
Ralph Rayner, Co-Chair, IMarEST Operational Oceanography Specialist Interest Group which is organising the conference, explains: “This is an opportunity to hear from leading climate change specialists and to gain an understanding of how mitigating and adapting to climate change will impact the use of the ocean and ocean resources. The day dedicated to rising sea levels will then explore impacts where the ocean meets the land, seeking to better predict and respond to the challenges of protecting coastal communities, infrastructure and the environment.”
World-leading speakers at the conference from Sir David King, Founder and Chair of the Centre for Climate Repair, Cambridge University, Rick Spinrad, who leads the US government’s climate agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, as well as speakers from the Schmidt Ocean Institute, the International Energy Agency and many more, will highlight current scientific understanding of the ocean-related aspects of climate change.
Given the misunderstandings about future rates of sea level rise, the morning sessions on October 27th about the realistic ranges by a group of experts should be very interesting and illuminating. The discussions will examine what we don’t know but need to know, and how to achieve it; providing insight into leading scientific understanding which can be turned into practical actions.
The two-day conference will also place national and international policy responses into the context of the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the UN’s Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, which is endorsing the conference.
“The next ten years are now widely accepted as critical for climate action; this is a global issue and we need global collaboration and action. The outcomes of our conference will be delivered at a side event and exhibition at COP26 and will make a key contribution to the UN Ocean Decade. ” Concludes Gus Jeans, Co-Chair, IMarEST Operational Oceanography SIG.

SUT ANNOUNCES SECOND VIRTUAL OFFSHORE WIND INTRODUCTORY COURSE
The Society for Underwater Technology’s (SUT) second virtual Offshore Wind Renewable Energy course, held in association with Cranfield University, will take place on 19-20 October over two online interactive 4-hour morning sessions..
The introductory offshore wind course featuring acknowledged industry and academic experts as presenters is designed with two specific groups in mind: professional non-engineering staff, who would benefit from understanding the offshore wind energy industry; and for engineers and technical staff new to the sector or making the transition from another industry.
