Amid rapid growth and expansion, 3D at Depth hires an energy executive as Vice President of North and Central America.

Tait brings over 20 years of leadership experience in the energy market.  Initially, he began his career in Energy Merger & Acquisition investment banking & corporate finance roles.  This was followed by several senior management & executive board-level roles with corporate development and growth in the Energy sector.  Before joining 3D at Depth, Tait held an integral role within the management team at ROVOP who developed and grew ROVOP over the last six (6) years.

Tait was a key driver in global geographic expansion, firmly establishing a presence in the United States (US), Middle EastAsia Pacific, and mainland Europe.  During his time at ROVOP, the company significantly increased global revenues, with the America's region becoming an established core to the business with several global client contracts being sourced, secured, and managed from the US.

Ocean and climate experts gather to discuss critical point in planet’s future

September 2021

The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) will provide a forum for experts, practitioners and ocean users to discuss climate change and the oceans, the theme of its 4th biennial Oceans of Knowledge conference. Organised by the Institute’s Special Interest Group (SIG) on Operational Oceanography, the 2-day conference will address three key themes: firstly, the sustainable use of the ocean and its resources, secondly, its role in natural and engineered climate mitigation and thirdly, rising sea levels and coastal vulnerability.

The conference is endorsed by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the busy programme includes talks by world-class speakers from leading organisations, including the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Schmidt Ocean Institute and the International Energy Agency. The discussions will focus attention on how better understanding the ocean will help ensure its future use as a source of energy and food is balanced with the need to protect ocean ecosystem services upon which we all ultimately depend.

“This is an opportunity to hear from leading climate change specialists and to gain an understanding of how mitigating and adapting to climate change will impact the use of the ocean and ocean resources.  The day dedicated to rising sea levels will then explore impacts where the ocean meets the land, seeking to better predict and respond to the challenges of protecting coastal communities, infrastructure and the environment.” Ralph Rayner, Co-Chair, IMarEST Operational Oceanography SIG.

Scene-setting keynotes will highlight current scientific understanding of the ocean-related aspects of climate change. SUT’s ‘ENERGY IN TRANSITION & ITS IMPACT ON OFFSHORE SITE INVESTIGATIONS’ NEWCASTLE SEMINAR

The Offshore Site Investigation and Geotechnics (OSIG) committee of the Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) will hold its first ‘in-person’ seminar in almost 18 months in mid-September.

The full-day event will address ‘Energy in Transition and its Impact on Offshore Site Investigations’, followed by a drinks reception and dinner; all being held at St. James’ Park, Newcastle upon Tyne, the home of Newcastle United FC.

The seminar, on Thursday 16 September, will comprise some 20 presentations including conventional and floating offshore wind, decommissioning and carbon capture and storage (CCS) from a wide variety of speakers from industry, academia and government. Companies/organisations presenting include Oil & Gas UK, MMO, MarineSpace, BP, RPS, Partrac, TotalEnergies, NGI, Cathie, Geowynd, SSE, DnV, Blue Gem Wind and Ørsted.

Remote Hydrography Conference and Exhibition moved to Dublin – February 2022

The Hydrographic Society UK first began preparations for a conference focused on Remote Hydrography back in late 2019.  Due to Covid, they have already been forced to delay the event more than once during 2020 and were planning for an exciting venue in Cork, Ireland for this November.  However, they have now been informed by the venue that due to Covid-19 it will no longer be possible to run the event there this year.  Once again, they are therefore forced to delay and adjust the plan…

They are now pleased to announce that they have secured the excellent venue of Dublin Castle, right in the centre of Ireland’s capital city, for the 22nd to 24th February 2022.  Remote Hydrography will be a three-day conference and exhibition focussed on developments in uncrewed platforms, associated sensors and software as well as marine remote sensing.  They are kindly supported by our partners the Geological Survey Ireland, Marine Institute, INFOMAR and Fáilte Ireland.  INFOMAR will also run their annual seminar on Monday 21st February at the same venue so that the two events can complement each other.

They hope you are able to adjust your schedules to accommodate, and once again apologise for the further changes.  However, they are sure you understand that they can only play the cards they are dealt!

Tidal Stream Supply Chain 2x supply chain webinars, 10th & 15th June

Tidal Stream Supply Chain “Meet the Buyer”: Developers share project plans and opportunities across six UK and French sites.

Two supply chain webinars events are planned on the 10th and 15th June where project and technology developers from tidal stream sites across the Channel in France and the UK will share the details of their forthcoming development and procurement plans. Both events will take place at 9.30 – 11:00 BST, (10.30 – 12:00 CET).

The events are part of the €45.4m Interreg funded Anglo-French Tidal Stream Industry Energiser (TIGER) project which aims to accelerate the commercialisation of the tidal stream industry in the Channel region by engaging regional supply chains and connecting them with leading tidal stream project and technology developers.

The 90-minute events will include introductory presentations from developers highlighting regional cross channel supply chain opportunities across the TIGER tidal stream sites. This includes a range of different site conditions and technologies with a range of different emerging needs. Participants are encouraged to sign up to both events which will be streamed simultaneously in French and English.

Why should you attend?

The presentations from developers will include details of project timelines, specifics as to the technologies deployed, and a variety of marine and onshore supply chain opportunities both current and future. These webinars are aimed at wide range of potential companies from small local suppliers providing for example craneage and transfer vessels up to and including large steel fabricators, marine operations and a wide range of civil engineering opportunities with varying scales of contract values.

Tidal stream turbines generate electricity from tidal currents using structures sometimes resembling underwater wind turbines (although there are still numerous different concepts - attend this even to find out more). Ocean Energy Europe’s ‘2030 Ocean Energy Vision’ predicts up to 2.4GW of Tidal stream energy capacity installed by 2030 and becoming cost competitive with fossil fuels. This means a sector with huge potential for market growth over the coming years with the potential to contribute to Government Net Zero targets.

Presenters announced for SUT's Virtual Awareness Course

A dozen experts drawn from Fellows and members of the Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) including selected speakers from BP, Wood, the Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum, Subsea 7, and Oceaneering will deliver the SUT’s foundation level virtual Subsea Awareness Course (SAC) taking place 7-11 June 2021. The 15-hour course will be held each morning and is based on SUT’s highly successful face-to-face 5-day course from which more than a thousand delegates have benefited during the past 20+ years.

Second annual Captain Don Walsh Award for Ocean Exploration is now open for entries

The Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) and The Marine Technology Society (MTS) announce the second annual Captain Don Walsh Award for Ocean Exploration is now open. Nominations must be received by 31 May 2021.

Awarded jointly by both societies, the Captain Don Walsh Award for Ocean Exploration is presented annually to an individual who has made an outstanding, sustained, international contribution to the development, application, or propagation of marine/ underwater technology toward the advancement of ocean exploration. The award is named in honour of Captain (Ret) Don Walsh, an accomplished American oceanographer, explorer, retired naval officer, and marine policy specialist. He and Jacques Piccard were aboard the bathyscaphe Trieste on January 23, 1960 when it made a record descent into the Mariana Trench, which is the deepest point of the world's oceans. Dr. Edie Widder, an MTS member, won the inaugural award in 2020.

The judging panel, comprised of the presidents and three members from each society, will reflect diversity in demographics, sector and discipline. In addition, Dr. Edie Widder, MacArthur Fellow, a deep-sea explorer, and conservationist known for her expertise in oceanographic research and technological innovation and her commitment to reversing the worldwide trend of marine ecosystem degradation, will join the judging panel.

“A pioneer, outstanding Naval officer, mentor and influencer is how I describe Don Walsh. MTS is proud to join SUT in this award that recognizes an individual who is pushing the limits of ocean exploration,” said Zdenka Willis, President of MTS

“Don Walsh has been an inspirational role model for six decades, we are looking for a winner whose achievements will similarly inspire early career marine technologist, scientists and engineers,” said Judith Patten MBE, President of the SUT.

Fugro launches MASSPeople international working group for remote and autonomous training standards

In partnership with SeaBot XR, a leading agency for next-generation cutting-edge learning products and services, and the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Fugro has launched MASSPeople, the Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) International Training Standards Working Group. The group consists of representatives from European and international maritime authorities who will collaborate to develop world-class training and competency standards for remote and autonomous vessels.

The introduction of remote and autonomous technology has brought new ways of working to the maritime sector, and the aim of MASSPeople is to explore the human dimension of remote and autonomously enabled marine surface vessels. Fugro and SeaBot XR have already been working together since 2019 to develop new standards and a training framework through which Fugro's employees can be upskilled in the operation of remote and autonomous vessels, and the new working group will continue these initiatives. MASSPeople will provide recommendations on new competency standards for inclusion into the International Convention of Standards on Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW); the group will also propose specialisms, training structures and qualification requirements for remote and autonomous operators. By focusing on the mariners who operate this new technology, the group aims to ensure that their skills can evolve effectively and to high industry safety standards.

HR Wallingford launches new virtual Dredging Management course

The HR Wallingford new virtual dredging management course will be delivered live over four days in February. This new online format has been developed from their successful two-day classroom course, and will provide an overview of the environmental aspects of dredging, the latest technology and equipment, and the management of dredged material and dredging projects.

The course is aimed at those who are responsible for commissioning and managing dredging contracts and those who regulate dredging. It has been designed by their industry experts and will deliver 16 hours of live lectures and exercises (via MS Teams) on 11, 12, 15 and 16 February. The three course tutors for this training have excellent technical and practical knowledge, 50 years of combined experience in the dredging market, and have been involved in many commercial and research projects of international significance.

We are excited to announce that SMI’s Marine Autonomy Challenge for University teams will be run in a totally remote mode for 2021, with a top prize of £2,000 available for the wining team. The MA Challenge is part of an ongoing engagement initiative between the maritime autonomous systems industry and future marine autonomy technologists. To increase participation, and achieve the goals of engagement with the students, the steering group decided to make the challenge remote for 2021.
