Tidal Stream Supply Chain “Meet the Buyer”: Developers share project plans and opportunities across six UK and French sites.

Two supply chain webinars events are planned on the 10th and 15th June where project and technology developers from tidal stream sites across the Channel in France and the UK will share the details of their forthcoming development and procurement plans. Both events will take place at 9.30 – 11:00 BST, (10.30 – 12:00 CET).

The events are part of the €45.4m Interreg funded Anglo-French Tidal Stream Industry Energiser (TIGER) project which aims to accelerate the commercialisation of the tidal stream industry in the Channel region by engaging regional supply chains and connecting them with leading tidal stream project and technology developers.

The 90-minute events will include introductory presentations from developers highlighting regional cross channel supply chain opportunities across the TIGER tidal stream sites. This includes a range of different site conditions and technologies with a range of different emerging needs. Participants are encouraged to sign up to both events which will be streamed simultaneously in French and English.

Why should you attend?

The presentations from developers will include details of project timelines, specifics as to the technologies deployed, and a variety of marine and onshore supply chain opportunities both current and future. These webinars are aimed at wide range of potential companies from small local suppliers providing for example craneage and transfer vessels up to and including large steel fabricators, marine operations and a wide range of civil engineering opportunities with varying scales of contract values.

Tidal stream turbines generate electricity from tidal currents using structures sometimes resembling underwater wind turbines (although there are still numerous different concepts - attend this even to find out more). Ocean Energy Europe’s ‘2030 Ocean Energy Vision’ predicts up to 2.4GW of Tidal stream energy capacity installed by 2030 and becoming cost competitive with fossil fuels. This means a sector with huge potential for market growth over the coming years with the potential to contribute to Government Net Zero targets.

Presenters announced for SUT's Virtual Awareness Course

A dozen experts drawn from Fellows and members of the Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) including selected speakers from BP, Wood, the Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum, Subsea 7, and Oceaneering will deliver the SUT’s foundation level virtual Subsea Awareness Course (SAC) taking place 7-11 June 2021. The 15-hour course will be held each morning and is based on SUT’s highly successful face-to-face 5-day course from which more than a thousand delegates have benefited during the past 20+ years.

OSIL Modular Vibrocorers Make Global Impact

Leading environmental monitoring systems manufacturers Ocean Scientific International Ltd (OSIL) is pleased to report that its range of robust and easy to use vibrocorer systems are increasingly in use worldwide.

The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project enters new agreement with Esri

London, 17 May 2021 – Seabed 2030 and Esri have entered a new formal agreement, which will see the two organisations work collaboratively towards the shared objective of assembling a global compilation of high-resolution bathymetric data, to assist us in the sustainable use of our planet.

Seabed 2030 is a collaborative project between The Nippon Foundation and GEBCO to inspire the complete mapping of the world's ocean by 2030, and to compile all bathymetric data into the freely available GEBCO Ocean Map. GEBCO is a joint project of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), and is the only organisation with a mandate to map the entire ocean floor.

Tritex NDT leading the way in Drone Thickness Measurements

Tritex NDT have for many years been manufacturing ultrasonic thickness gauges and are now established as one of the leading companies offering multiple echo gauges. Multiple echo technology means that thickness measurements can be taken through 6mm thick coatings, only the metal substrate is measured. It doesn’t matter whether the coating is paint, epoxy or bitumen, it is completely ignored. This has huge advantages over having to remove coatings, both in time and money. It also has a big advantage when developing a gauge to mount onto a drone.

Taking thickness measurements at height has always been a requirement, and up until recently this has been done using scaffolding or rope access techniques. However, with the Tritex Multigauge 6000 dedicated Drone Thickness Gauge, first developed over three years ago, this is now a lot safer and cost effective than before.

Tritex NDT are leading the way in this application and are the only company worldwide with a dedicated thickness gauge to mount onto drones. In excess of 100 systems have so far been sold, with repeat orders coming from major petrochemical companies and class societies. The gauge and technology have been improved over three years of development in response to customer’s feedback and requirements.

The Multigauge 6000 consists of three parts, which includes the gauge, a gel dispenser and a probe holder for the correct alignment of the probe. The single crystal probe ensures accurate measurements on curved surfaces, such as storage tanks and pipelines. Thickness readings are transmitted wirelessly up to 500 metres, using its integrated RF transmitter, to a dedicated software that allows the operator to record measurements, set up templates and to remotely control the gel dispenser before touching the probe onto the surface.

The gauge can mount onto any ‘work class’ type drone, with the most popular being the DJI Matrice 210 or 300. Tritex NDT have also developed their own custom drone, the Multigauge 6500, specifically designed to provide a complete solution. The Multigauge 6500 ‘Flying Thickness Gauge’ has eight rotors to provide redundancy, as well as propellor guards so that it can be easily used inside tanks.

Ashtead Technology awarded funding through Canada’s Ocean Supercluster for Unmanned Digital Twinning Project

Welaptega, an Ashtead Technology company, has launched a $500,000 (USD) initiative to develop a product to enable digital twinning of underwater infrastructure without the need for offshore personnel.

Funding for the Unmanned Digital Twinning Project has been awarded by Canada’s Ocean Supercluster, an industry-led, national ocean cluster that’s growing the ocean economy in a digital, sustainable, and inclusive way.

In collaboration with Whitecap Scientific, SubC Imaging, and Nova Scotia Community College SEATAC division, the new digital twinning technology will develop an intuitive bridge between Welaptega’s and Whitecap Scientific’s technology systems. Upon successful launch of the project, conventional offshore ROV and vessel crew will be able to confidently collect high quality image data for post-processing digital twins, guided by real-time 3D reconstruction, to give feedback on image quality and coverage.
