Job location: This is a flexible home-based role with occasional travel for meetings and events.

Purpose: This key and exciting role makes the post-holder a focal point of the Hydrographic sector, with responsibility for the day-to-day management of THS:UKI and its finances in line with the objectives of the organisation to maintain and support the membership body. You will support the promotion of the society and Hydrographic profession through delivery of THS:UKI events, publications, media platforms and supporting the Chief Executive Officer with the implementation of the Strategic Plan.

Core Aims: Ensuring the society operates effectively and meets its obligations through the administration of financial accounts and compliance reporting, encouraging internal and external engagement and supporting senior management with the implementation of strategies which develop the relevance of THS:UKI. The post holder will have policy, process and expenditure related decision-making authority relevant to the position, to support the delivery of the publication and events programme. This includes deployment of resourcing within delegated limits, or if beyond that to make recommendations to senior management with regards to expenditure.

Kongsberg Discovery awarded 24 month contract with the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU)

Kongsberg Discovery is excited to announce a Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) award to assist in the U.S. Navy’s Large Displacement Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (LDUUV) prototype.

Kongsberg Discovery has been awarded a contract with the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to rapidly deliver HUGIN Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) capabilities for the U.S. Military. The total contract could result in the Navy acquiring HUGIN Endurance and HUGIN Superior deep-water AUV systems.

Kongsberg Discovery offers unmatched and proven Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) experience spanning over 30 years. Since the start, Kongsberg continues to develop and deliver the most successful and trusted large deep-water AUV systems for both commercial and government customers, with approximately 100 large HUGIN AUV systems delivered globally.

HUGIN Endurance, one of the newest members in the HUGIN AUV family, is the biggest and most capable with its 39’ length, 47” diameter and 15-day endurance, enabling unsupervised shore-to-shore operations over a 1,200 nm range. HUGIN Superior, the workhorse of KONGSBERG’s HUGIN AUV family and the deep-water industry standard, is a 22’ long, 35” diameter, and 70-hour endurance vehicle.

New global research initiative investigates carbon sequestration potential of kelp

Could kelp be a secret weapon in the fight against climate change? A new research project aims to answer that question by better understanding how kelp contributes to carbon sequestration in our oceans.

The international collaboration, led by New Zealand’s Cawthron Institute with partners Sequench (NZ), Kelp Forest Foundation (Netherlands), and NatureMetrics (UK), aims to revolutionize our comprehension of kelp forests' contributions to the global carbon cycle and their potential as a tool for climate mitigation.

Nathan Geraldi, Lead Developer for Ocean Solutions at NatureMetrics, said seaweeds, particularly kelp, could be a significant source of the carbon sequestered in the ocean.

“Up until now, kelp’s contribution to the carbon cycle has remained unknown because we have not had the tools to measure it.”

Samantha Deane, Managing Director of the Kelp Forest Foundation, said traditional methods such as stable isotope, pigments, and lipid analysis have been limited in their ability to accurately detect and identify kelp-derived carbon in marine sediments.

“This project's approach leverages the power of environmental DNA, which involves the extraction of genetic material directly from environmental samples without any obvious signs of biological source material.”

Cawthron Institute’s Dr Xavier Pochon, who will lead the project, said a core focus of the project will involve building a kelp genomic library.

“We’ll be using leading edge molecular diagnostic tools to estimate the amount of kelp-derived organic matter that is stored in marine sediments and surrounding environments.”

Anastasija Zaiko of Sequench said the central hypothesis of this research is that eDNA is a reliable and traceable marker for tracking giant kelp-derived carbon, allowing for a more accurate assessment of carbon sequestration potential in kelp forests.

“By successfully identifying and quantifying giant kelp DNA in sediment samples, this project aims to establish a direct link between source and sink habitats.”

Elif Demir-Hilton, advisor at Oceankind, said they are happy to support this strategic partnership to design and test molecular tools for species-specific carbon tracing.

“The capacity to track the fate of kelp carbon can inform restoration and conservation efforts and fill an important gap in the toolkit for carbon sequestration.”

 


Ocean Census and Ocean Genome Legacy forge alliance to revolutionise marine biodiversity research

Ocean Census, a global mission to discover marine life, is excited to announce a new partnership with Northeastern University's Ocean Genome Legacy center (OGL), a research laboratory and public-access marine DNA and tissue bank, as part of the growing Ocean Census Alliance.

This collaboration unites the Ocean Census commitment to accelerate the discovery of ocean life with the Ocean Genome Legacy center’s two decades of expertise in marine genomics, with the goal of catalysing our understanding and protection of marine biodiversity.

Initiated by The Nippon Foundation and Nekton in April 2023, Ocean Census has set an ambitious global target to discover 100,000 new species over the decade. Despite estimations that our ocean is home to 1-2 million species, only a fraction, about 10-25%, has been documented so far. Historically, the pace of species discovery has been steady, with approximately 1,500 new ocean species identified each year since the 1840s. Recent decades have seen a slight uptick, but the introduction of cutting-edge technologies in imaging, DNA sequencing, and artificial intelligence is poised to dramatically accelerate this rate.

OGL is set to play a pivotal role in the global programme, contributing extensive experience in collecting, exploring, preserving and sharing the genomic diversity of the sea to enrich the process of species discovery and documentation. In addition, OGL’s global network of research collaborators will be engaged in Ocean Census, including participating in expeditions, knowledge sharing, and public engagement, strengthening this collaborative initiative.

Voyis empowers Memorial University's Galápagos Coral Expedition

These deep-dwelling corals, shrouded in mystery due to their inaccessibility, hold vital ecological significance. The expedition, taking place from September 18 to October 19, 2023, is equipped with advanced technology, including Voyis' Insight Micro laser scanner, to unlock the secrets of these vertical coral reefs.

Cold-water corals on cliffs have long presented challenges to researchers due to their depth and inaccessibility to ship-based sensors. The Insight Micro laser scanner, known for its capability to capture high-resolution 3D data and crisp still images with low power consumption, is poised to play a pivotal role in overcoming these obstacles.

The Galápagos Marine Reserve, one of the world's largest marine protected areas, ensures that these coral ecosystems have remained untouched by destructive human activities. This pristine environment provides an unprecedented opportunity for Chief Scientist Katleen Robert and her team to study undisturbed ecosystems. The resulting baseline data will be shared with local colleagues and used in regional conservation efforts.

While tropical and shallow-water corals are well-documented, cold-water corals constitute approximately half of the global coral population. Yet, the vertical environments where many thrive remain largely unexplored. This knowledge gap, especially in the southern hemisphere, underscores the significance of this expedition in contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of global coral ecosystems.

Cold-water corals, which lack symbiotic algae found in shallow-water corals, rely on passing currents for sustenance. The team's research will shed light on the intricate relationship between water column dynamics, physical reef features, and coral survival. Additionally, the connection between geology and coral fine-scale distribution will be examined to better comprehend the environmental conditions shaping these vertical reefs.

The heart of this expedition lies in the deployment of the ultra-high-resolution laser scanner, which will create a detailed 3D reconstruction of the coral habitat, including cliff morphology and biological layers. Using the ROV SuBastian as a survey vehicle, the team will map these vertical reefs with unparalleled precision, allowing for the study of organism distribution, biodiversity, coral growth, and the identification of individual species. This digital reconstruction will provide accessible insights for scientists and the public alike.

The insights gained from this expedition will not only advance our understanding of these understudied ecosystems but also provide a critical reference point for evaluating human impact and shaping future conservation efforts. Jan De Nul Group selects MacArtney's cutting-edge CEMAC tensioner systems for complete CLV fleet

MacArtney's comprehensive scope involves designing, constructing, and delivering advanced tensioner systems for Jan De Nul Group’s entire cable-laying fleet, including the Connector, Willem de Vlamingh and the new Fleeming Jenkin. The scope also encompasses upgrading tensioner systems previously delivered for the Isaac Newton.

Remarkably, MacArtney's involvement extends to the recently announced XL CLV - the Fleeming Jenkin - boasting a cable carrying capacity of 28,000 tonnes and engineered for ultra-deep laying in waters up to 3,000 meters, as well as bundled lay operations.

For the XL CLV, MacArtney will supply three high-capacity CEMAC four-track main deck tensioners designed to facilitate bundled lay operations with minimised cable distance and combined lay operations up to 150 tonnes, two CEMAC loading arm tensioners and associated fully electrical 1-tonne cable engines.

PDE Offshore upgrades its Sonardyne system as it leads Taiwanese exploration of offshore renewable energy

Leading Taiwanese offshore geophysical and geotechnical investigation company PDE Offshore Corporation have upgraded its underwater acoustic positioning system onboard MV Geo Energy to Sonardyne’s Ranger 2 USBL system. This will further enhance its capability in the exploration of offshore renewable energy (ORE) in Taiwan.

PDE Offshore's new geotechnical vessel Geo Power, also equipped with Ranger 2 USBL system is now under conversion work and will join the fleet in mid-2024 which will provide both seabed and downhole cone penetration testing services.

PDE Offshore have been conducting geotechnical and soil investigation in the shallow waters of the Taiwanese Strait since 2017 as the country looks to replace its coal-based energy with cleaner, sustainable alternatives such as offshore wind farms.

Working with most of the world’s leading ORE developers, PDE Offshore wanted to increase their capability. This required a trusted and proven USBL positioning system for their Geo technical vessel to work in greater water depths and challenging water conditions as their operations expanded.

Having already successfully used Sonardyne’s Mini Ranger 2 for several years, investing in the full Ranger 2 system was a logical choice to provide the reliable dynamic positioning references essential for their operations, whilst also giving the capability for operating in greater depths and more challenging conditions.

Incorporating over 30 years of USBL knowledge, Sonardyne’s Ranger 2 system is anything but standard. It can be used to track anything, in any depth, from any vessel. Track a subsea asset, position or communicate with an underwater vehicle, dynamically position your vessel – or do all of this simultaneously. Sapura enhances subsea capabilities with acquisition of Exail Rovins Nano inertial navigation systems

Sapura, a leading Brazilian provider of subsea services, has recently acquired eight units of Exail Rovins Nano Inertial Navigation Systems (INS). Integrated into Sapura's fleet of remotely operated vehicles (ROV), Exail INS are intended to significantly enhance Sapura’s ROVs capabilities in offshore installation of subsea equipment.

Ensuring highly accurate navigation down to 6000 meters, Rovins Nano INS will help Sapura to lay flex pipes and deploy subsea hardware onto the seabed, such as templates and manifolds, rigid jumper spools or tie-in-spools. Rovins Nano, equipped with advanced sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, will function as the central component in the ROV’s navigation and positioning system. It will play a vital role in determining the ROV's position, orientation, and velocity with precision, which is essential for the accurate positioning and installation of subsea equipment. This integration is set to optimise Sapura’s overall high operational standards such as efficiency and accuracy.

The Future Marine Research Infrastructure programme (FMRI) aims to develop and deliver the Natural Environment Research Council’s (NERC) strategic investment in the next generation of large-scale, marine research infrastructure. The programme is working towards a high-value UKRI Infrastructure Fund bid and is part of the UK Government’s Major Projects Portfolio.

The FMRI programme is currently in business case development phase, building the strategic and economic case to identify a preferred option in line with the HM Treasury Green Book process. FMRI is also coordinating activity to engage the marine science community while building capabilities that will de-risk the transition

The Webinar will provide explain the scope and goals of the FMRI programme, overall timeline and how the Science Requirements Framework will be developed along with details of how to engage and contribute.

FET appoints new lead to grow its energy transition portfolio

Forum Energy Technologies (FET) has appointed its first ever energy transition business development manager within its subsea business, reinforcing the company’s commitment to helping operators achieve greater carbon emission improvements.

Martin Thomson, who will be based at the company’s Aberdeen office, brings with him a wealth of experience in both the subsea and offshore wind sectors as the firm seeks to bolster its influence in the market. Martin has previously held senior sales positions at Subsea7, GE Oil & Gas, KCA Deutag and Oerlikon Surface Solutions. He joins FET from Dril-Quip where he was director of sales – Europe and Africa.

His appointment marks an exciting milestone for FET as it intensifies its commitment to supporting the transition of the energy landscape, particularly in offshore wind energy. Martin will report directly to FET’s Houston headquarters.
