Planet Ocean ecoSUB Robotics Division are seeking two talented individuals to join our small team to develop our capabilities at this next crucial growth phase of the technology.

Our ecoSUB Division is based within the Marine Robotics Innovation Centre within the National Oceanography Centre Southampton.

ecoSUB Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are robotic platforms at the leading edge of subsea technology development. They are affordable, intelligently designed and extremely disruptive to the market, markedly increasing accessibility to a wide range of users in research, offshore energy, and defence markets. Following the release of production systems, the ecoSUB division is in the process of growing a strong team of talented engineers to advance the system and achieve the growth plan.

Senior Robotics & Embedded Software Engineer

This position will primarily be responsible for software development for the ecoSUB AUV. The embedded software is very much at the heart of the AUV system and as such is the lead engineering role. This role involves working closely with mechanical and electronics development to ensure complete system functionality and cohesive operation. The role is primarily R&D focused with aspects of existing system support. The Senior Robotics & Embedded Software Engineer role will involve supporting colleagues and will benefit from career development opportunities and excellent compensation. The role will involve fieldwork and travel, with time spent at sea guaranteed. Required offshore training will be provided.

 Production, Procurement & Test Manager

ecoSUB AUVs are self-contained electro-mechanical systems produced in small batches. The Production, Procurement & Test Manager role is responsible for production and testing of the ecoSUB AUV and associated products. This role involves working closely with R&D engineers across software, mechanical and electronics to ensure complete system functionality and cohesive operation. The role is primarily associated with the procurement of materials, system build and testing, liaison with sub-contractors and suppliers, documentation, and quality control. This is a new role within the ecoSUB team and requires the successful candidate to grow the ecoSUB teams’ capability to efficiently build and deliver production systems as well as supporting R&D’s test requirements. The role will involve future recruitment and development of a wider team to deliver the capacity and services required by the division. The role will involve fieldwork and travel, with time spent at sea guaranteed. Required offshore training will be provided.

The Role

Confidence, credibility and impeccable communication skills are essential for this role, as you will be working closely with colleagues across the business and with high profile customers across our sector.

You will receive extensive training on our bespoke systems, but you will be expected to demonstrate high level competence with electrical systems, data and / or telemetry systems, and a passion for engineering.   You will be expected to maintain high levels of technical competence across ocean and maritime technologies; we will support you with further professional development in our industry.

Experience & Qualifications

• Higher Education in engineering, maritime, ocean science or similar
• Experience of working hands-on with maritime or environmental monitoring instruments, equipment and software
• Software, programming and design skills (e.g. CAD drawing)
• Evidence of extracurricular team activities e.g. sports, clubs or societies, to support your professional and personal development to date.

This is a flexible home-based opportunity to deliver the operation and engagement of The Hydrographic Society UK & Ireland and help grow the footprint and influence of the Society and the seabed mapping profession in general.

Reports to:       THS:UKI Chief Executive

Job location:     This is a flexible home-based role with occasional travel for meetings and events.

Purpose:              This key and exciting role makes the post-holder a focal point of the Hydrographic sector, with responsibility for the day-to-day management of THS:UKI and its finances in line with the objectives of the organisation to maintain and support the membership body.  You will support the promotion of the society and Hydrographic profession through delivery of THS:UKI events, publications, media platforms and supporting the Chief Executive Officer with the implementation of the Strategic Plan.

Core Aims:          Ensuring the society operates effectively and meets its obligations through the administration of financial accounts and compliance reporting, encouraging internal and external engagement and supporting senior management with the implementation of strategies which develop the relevance of THS:UKI.  The post holder will have policy, process and expenditure related decision-making authority relevant to the position, to support the delivery of the publication and events programme. This includes deployment of resourcing within delegated limits, or if beyond that to make recommendations to senior management with regards to expenditure.

Project Hydrographic Surveyor required to join world leading geophysical survey team in Portchester

You will be responsible for data quality, working with field teams to deliver the project objectives and the Project Managers and clients shaping the project.

You will coach and mentor team members; promoting quality and ensuring industry-leading data is delivered. You will gain exposure to a variety of projects, data types, and markets (including renewables, UXO, pipeline inspection), processing different hydrographic data. Although office based you will have the opportunity to go offshore.

This job is for you if:

• You have strong technical understanding of hydrographic data sets including multibeam echosounder, GNSS tides, SVPs, USBL and backscatter.
• You have experience of hydrographic data processing and report writing.
• You have excellent attention to detail.
• You are confident managing a team and interacting with clients.
• You are highly numerate and literate.

Here’s what a typical week would be like:

• Three days a week processing data, undertaking data QC and providing feedback.
• Half a day managing the hydrographic processing element of a project; tracking progress, planning tasks, assigning resources and managing the project delivery schedule.
• Half a day leading or attending meetings with the client, Project Manager and project team as the project technical lead.
• Half a day writing or completing QC on technical reports.
• Half a day assisting the vessel with calibrations, technical issues or planning.

Who we’re looking for:

• Hydrography, ocean science or similar qualification.
• Strong knowledge of hydrographic survey techniques.
• Experience of hydrographic processing software (Teledyne CARIS, Fugro Starfix or Applanix POSPac).
• Good verbal and written skills.
• Management, coaching and training experience.
• Project management experience.
• Able to work offshore for up to 4 weeks at a time
• Offshore experience in related field

You will need to pass an offshore medical prior to employment.

Experience & Qualifications 

• Higher education in the fields of marine / maritime / engineering.

• Strong head for business/ relationship development.
